WASHINGTON -- The U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) announced that federal aid has been made available to the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico to supplement commonwealth and local recovery efforts in the area struck by Hurricane Irene beginning on August 21, 2011, and continuing.

En esta trayectoria el ojo del huracán cruzará esta noche el sureste y centro de Bahamas para luego proseguir hacia el noroeste de esta nación caribeña mañana.

NAGUA, República Dominicana — El huracán Irene azotaba este martes República Dominicana con intensas lluvias y vientos de 160 km/h que dejan al menos 7.000 desplazados, mientras avanza hacia las islas Turcos y Caicos con pronóstico de tocar fortalecido la costa sureste de Estados Unidos.

U.S. weather forecasters say Hurricane Irene, the first Atlantic hurricane of the 2011 season, has strengthened as it takes aim at the Bahamas and is expected to intensify.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami said in its latest bulletin Monday that Irene had grown into a Category 2 storm on the five-point scale of hurricane intensity. Forecasters said the storm now had winds of 160 kilometers per hour and was located about 210 kilometers east of Puerto Plata in the Dominican Republic. It was moving toward the west-northwest.

Monday, August 22, 2011 — Irene, the first hurricane of 2011, is pounding Puerto Rico today with heavy rain and winds as high as 80 miles per hour after leaving many residents on St. Thomas and St. Croix without power Sunday. Irene is expected to gain strength as the week goes on, threatening Florida and the southeast states as early as Thursday.
