After passing through the Caribbean, Hurricane Ivan came ashore the US Gulf coast on Thursday, 16 September as a category 4 hurricane. It took one week, from 7 to 14 September, for the hurricane to travel across the Caribbean, causing over 70 deaths and severe damage along its way. Hurricane Ivan caused devastation in Grenada and Grand Cayman, significant damage in Jamaica, and lesser damage in other island nations such as Trinidad and Tobago.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Sept 20 (AFP) - More than 600 people have died in massive floods that raged across northern Haiti after Tropical Storm Jeanne hit this crushingly poor Caribbean nation over the weekend, a UN spokesman said Monday, while 18 people were killed in other Caribbean islands.

Humanitarian organizations counted some 500 bodies at a hospital in the northern town of Gonaives, which was devastated by the storm, said Toussaint Kongo-Doudou, spokesman for the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH).

Tropical Storm Jeanne threatens Puerto Rico, two killed

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico, Sept 15 (AFP) - Tropical Storm Jeanne crashed ashore in densely populated Puerto Rico on Wednesday, killing two people, dumping heavy rains and flooding low-lying areas, authorities and local media said, as Hurricane Ivan raged toward the US coast.

Emergency Service chief Jose Villegas told local media a woman was killed as she fled her home. The strong storm ripped the zinc roof off the home and the woman was hit by the falling sheet of metal, he said.

1. The National Weather Center in Miami reports that at 1500GMT today, the center of tropical storm Jeanne was located near latitude 17.8 North, longitude 65.8 West or about 45 miles (75 km).south-southeast of San Juan , Puerto Rico. This is also about 65 miles (105 km) west of St. Croix.
