Famine kills at least 80 in Indonesia's Papua province

Jakarta (dpa) - The death toll from a famine that has reportedly plagued remote villages in Indonesia's easternmost province of Papua rose to 80 with dozens of other people falling seriously ill, local media said Monday.
Local church leaders and health officials said severe hunger had struck hundreds of residents living in seven subdistricts in the Yahukimo regency since September, the local Suara Pembaruan daily newspaper reported.

Yahukimo district chief Ones Pahebol told the daily that the death toll from starvation rose to 80, up from 57 reported over the weekend.

The government is sending emergency food and medical supplies to Papua province after reports that at least 55 people have starved to death there over the past month.
Another 117 people are said to be seriously ill as a result of the food shortage in seven of the 14 subdistricts of jungle-covered Yahukimo regency, which is located in the remote center of the resource-rich but underdeveloped province.

Caritas aids victims of the forgotten disaster

A year ago this week, a little-publicised disaster occurred on Australia's doorstep.
A volcanic eruption on Manam Island in Madang Province of Papua New Guinea forced the evacuation of close to 10,000 people. The emergency caused a humanitarian crisis, the long-term scale of which is rarely seen in the Pacific region.

The news did not make headlines in Australia. In fact few media outlets picked up the story at all.

Papua New Guinea: PNG's West New Britain province on alert as volcano continues to erupt

In Papua New Guinea, volcano experts are closely monitoring the sudden eruption of a dormant volcano in the West New Britain province.

Mount Garbuna erupted on Sunday spewing fine ash and lava and threatening more than 20,000 local residents close to the volcano.

Local provincial authorities say people are taking all the necessary precautions and are prepared for evacuation if the volcanic eruptions get bigger.

District officer, Gawaga Ewabo, says there have been no reports of deaths or property damage.

New permits allow Indonesian refugees to move on in Papua New Guinea

EAST AWIN, Papua New Guinea, October 14 (UNHCR) - Almost a year to the day since 184 refugees from Indonesia's Papua province (formerly known as Irian Jaya) were transferred to the remote refugee settlement area of East Awin in Papua New Guinea, they have been granted residency permits which will transform their daily lives.

Papua New Guinea; Bad weather continues to create havoc in PNG

Continuing heavy rains and unusual weather conditions in Papua New Guinea have been blamed for the latest damage to roads, bridges, homes and food gardens.

Key infrastructure and beach hotels in the Morobe and Madang provinces are the latest to be affected by the king tides and flooding.

Gulf and Western provinces, as well as Bougainville, have also been subject to damaging weather.

Morobe Governor Luther Wenge says officials are assessing the damage

The governor says he has received reports from local officials but he intends to visit the areas himself.

More Australian aid for PNG volcano relief

Australia is providing an additional $170,000 to assist villagers affected by the volcanic eruptions at Manam Island and Langila in Papua New Guinea (PNG), the Parliamentary Secretary for Foreign Affairs, Bruce Billson, announced today.

Papua New Guinea: NZAID commits more funds for World Vision's work in Manam

World Vision Papua New Guinea and the New Zealand Agency for International Development (NZAID) last week signed an agreement for more than US$500,000 worth of additional funding towards food relief for people displaced by last year's volcanic eruption in Manam, in Madang Province.

The agreement, signed on July 7, will help World Vision's Manam Relief Project to supply food - including canned meat, salt, sugar, flour, oil and a variety of local food - for approximately 10,000 displaced people.

PNG: NZ assists volcano-affected Manam Islanders

Aid Minister Marian Hobbs today announced a strengthening of the partnership between New Zealand's international aid and development agency, NZAID and World Vision PNG, which is providing much-needed food aid for almost 10,000 Manam Islanders made homeless by recent volcanic activity.
"Since December we have been working with World Vision to assist those affected by the eruptions," Marian Hobbs said. "I have recently approved additional funding of $750,000 which will take New Zealand's contribution so far to around $1 million. "
