Continuing its debate on strengthening the coordination of humanitarian and disaster relief assistance of the United Nations, the General Assembly this afternoon adopted, without a vote, a resolution on international cooperation and coordination for the human and ecological rehabilitation and economic development of the Semipalatinsk region (Kazakhstan). By the terms of that text, it stressed the need for extra efforts in solving problems with regard to the region and its population.

5,000 feared homeless after PNG quake

PORT MORESBY, Nov 21 (AFP) - Up to 5,000 people were left homeless in Papua New Guinea after a huge earthquake measuring 7.9 on the Richter scale and a tsunami, the Australian Associated Press reported Tuesday.

Thousands were believed to have been left without shelter on New Ireland, East New Britain and on Bougainville island after traditional huts were destroyed by Thursday's quake and tidal surge.

The tsunami reached a height of only one metre at Rabaul and Kokopo on East New Britain, but reached 2.5 to three metres on New Ireland and Bougainville.

CANBERRA (Nov. 19) XINHUA - Parts of the East New Britain province in northern Papua New Guinea (PNG) was rocked by another major earthquake just before midnight Saturday night, the Australian Associated Press (AAP) reported Sunday.

But the region's volcano and earthquake-seasoned residents had reoccupied towns they had fled in fear of a tsunami last Thursday, the AAP said.

It quoted local residents as saying on Sunday that a quake "of about four or five (on the Richter scale) hit just before midnight last night."

Boy, 12, dies as PNG quake relief efforts begin

BRISBANE, Nov 19 (Reuters) - At least one person has died in a series of powerful earthquakes in northeast Papua New Guinea and officials said on Sunday they feared further casualties in the remote region as more damage reports come in.

The National Disaster and Emergency Service said a 12-year-old boy was the first reported casualty of five major earthquakes that have struck the New Britain and New Ireland island provinces, 800 km (500 miles) northeast of Port Moresby, since Thursday.

Another massive quake hits Papua New Guinea

PORT MORESBY, Nov 18 (AFP) - An earthquake of preliminary magnitude 7.3 on the Richter scale hit Papua New Guinea Saturday in the same area rocked by two big quakes two days ago.

Officials said the extent of any damage caused by the latest temblor would not be known until Sunday at the earliest.

The US Geological Survey reported the quake was a 7.3 and hit at 1401 GMT about 150 kilometres (95 miles) south of Rabaul in New Britain province.

Tsunami hits Papua New Guinea

A powerful earthquake in the Pacific created a large tsunami that struck the coast of Papua New Guinea Thursday (Nov. 16). According to the Associated Press there were no injuries, but some structures were damaged and communications with two towns were briefly cut off.

A supermarket and several other buildings were damaged in the towns of Rabaul and Kokopo on the northeast coast. The two towns, with a combined population around 10,000, saw little overall

PNG authorities appeal for calm after big earthquake

The authorities in Northern Papua New Guinna have appealed for calm following a large earth quake this afternoon.

Richard Dinnen reports the quake measured more than Seven on the Richter Scale.

The quake was felt across East New Britain and New Ireland provinces. Residents in Rabaul Town have told me the ground shook strongly for almost a minute and that water in swimming pools and tanks developed half a metre waves while the quake continued. Preliminary estimates put the quake at between seven and eight on the Richter scale.

Papua New Guinea hit by two huge quakes, damage limited

PORT MORESBY, Nov 16 (AFP) - Two huge earthquakes rocked the remote nation of Papua New Guinea Thursday causing a small tidal wave to wash over an island area, but early reports said damage was limited.

The US Geological Survey in Denver said on its web site that the first quake hit 33 kilometres (20 miles) below the surface near the town of Rabaul at 0454 GMT. The French seismic observatory in Strasbourg measured it as 7.9 on the Richter scale.

The Japanese meteorological agency, citing information from the US Geological Survey, said a second temblor also jolted

An earthquake measuring 8 on the Richter scale hit the coast of the New Ireland region (3.97S, 152.32E) at 4:54 am (UTC) on 16 November. This was followed by a quake of magnitude 7.7 which hit a nearby area 5.24S/153.06E at 7:42 am (UTC). After the earthquakes, landslides occurred on the road to Gazelle Peninsula. Several water tanks were broken and damaged and a supermarket was hit by a wave in Rabaul. There was a degree of panic in the city, but no casualties were reported.
