New "excision" law does not relieve Australia of its responsibilities towards asylum-seekers

The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) on Wednesday reiterated its concerns about the treatment of asylum-seekers arriving by sea to Australia.

According to new legislation, all asylum-seekers arriving by boat anywhere in Australia are now subject to transfer to Nauru or Papua New Guinea for processing and will only have their claims for refugee status assessed in Australia if the Minister for Immigration and Citizenship makes a personal decision to allow them to, on the basis of it being in the public interest to do so.

PNG grapples with ageing health workforce

Report
IRIN

PORT MORESBY, 14 March 2013 (IRIN) - Papua New Guinea (PNG) is a Pacific country rich in natural resources, yet its health staffing levels are comparable to the world's poorest countries due to a rapidly retiring force and lack of qualified replacements.

"If we do not do anything about our ageing workforce quickly, the health system may collapse," former health minister Jamie Maxton Graham told parliament in 2012.

International Women’s Day - 8 March 2013: Statement by the Representatives of the European Union, France and Great Britain in Papua New Guinea

On 8 March 2013 we honor International Women’s Day, a day on which we acknowledge the important role that women play in society, and a day on which women need to be inspired and celebrated for their achievements. It is, unfortunately, also a day on which to recall that the elimination and prevention of all forms of violence against women and girls is still far from being realised.

Statement by the United Nations Country Team in Papua New Guinea

The United Nations (UN) system in Papua New Guinea (PNG) is gravely concerned by the torture and killing of Ms. Kepari Laniata, a 20-year-old young woman who was accused of using sorcery to kill a six-year old boy in Mount Hagen on 6 February 2013, and other cases of sorcery-related violence reported by the national media in recent days. The case of the late Ms. Laniata is unfortunately one of many and illustrates the need for urgent attention and action to address this serious human rights violation. Many such cases go unreported and grave injustice is done to the citizens of PNG.

Bednet indifference threatens PNG progress on malaria

Report
IRIN

MASUMAVE, 15 February 2013 (IRIN) - Papua New Guinea (PNG) could face an upsurge in malaria cases due to overly relaxed attitudes to the use of bednets, health experts warn.

“Sometimes I use it, sometimes I don’t,” Susan Kake, 45, said outside her hut in Masumave, a village of 2,000 largely subsistence farmers in PNG’s remote Eastern Highlands Province. “If I’m going to get it, I’m going to get it.”

The country has made progress in stemming the disease’s spread in the past few years, but such fatalism is worrying.

UN says Australia's PNG refugee camp is inadequate

02/04/2013 06:18 GMT

SYDNEY, Feb 4, 2013 (AFP) - A United Nations report Monday criticised Australia's immigration camp on Papua New Guinea, warning living conditions are harsh and asylum-seekers' detention arbitrary.

The UN High Commissioner for Refugees called for no more children to be sent to the camp on remote Manus Island, which was established as part of Australia's plan to ship refugees offshore to deter more from coming.

Resource concerns delay PNG flood response

Papua New Guinea's National Disaster Centre says it lacks both the staff and logistical capacity to respond quickly to natural disasters throughout the country.

Tens of thousands of people have been affected by flooding in PNG's Morobe, Oro and parts of the Highlands provinces.

Director Martin Mose told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat program it cannot do rapid assessment and response as it lacks the capacity to help those people affected.

"We are well behind time now," he said.

Concern over unsafe abortions in Papua New Guinea

Report
IRIN

BANGKOK, 25 January 2013 (IRIN) - Health experts are concerned about the number of unsafe abortions taking place in Papua New Guinea (PNG).

"Nobody knows the actual numbers, but it's clear the number of school-age girls [having unsafe abortions] is unacceptably high," says Lisa Vallely, head of the maternal and child health section of the PNG Institute of Medical Research (IMR) and principal investigator of a new study on the issue.
