Despite slow funding, projects featured in the appeal are moving forward, notably the installation of safe water supplies, the training of health personnel and support for community health measures. Distribution of relief goods, a major logistics feat, has been almost completed. Resettlement of displaced villagers is moving ahead and, in parallel, Red Cross medium term projects are taking shape. A nutrition survey is being acted on, disability and trauma assessments have taken place and a number of community based health initiatives are close to realisation.

You would have already been informed through the international media on the tsunami (tidal wave) which brought catastrophe upon three Aitape sub-district villages in the northwestern part of Papua New Guinea on the night of Friday, July 17, 1998. The Embassy of Papua New Guinea staff and their families are saddened by this latest tragedy and are appealing for combined prayers and support for those country-folks affected.
