Continued instability threatens IDP rehabilitation

The ceasefire agreed in July 2003 between the government and the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) -- the main rebel group fighting for independence on the southern island of Mindanao -- has been holding relatively well in the past two years and the absence of any major clashes has allowed for the return of the vast majority of the estimated 400,000 people displaced in 2003. Mindanao remains nevertheless a troubled region where the presence of other armed groups such as the rebels of the communist New People's Army (NPA) or the Abu Sayyaf group is a regular cause of displacement.

Philippines: No corn shortage despite typhoons

The Department of Agriculture (DA) today said that there will be no corn supply shortage this year despite the series of typhoons that battered Bicol, Southern Tagalog and Central Luzon recently.
Agriculture Secretary Arthur C. Yap made this assurance, saying that corn production in other parts of the country was more than enough to make up for the crop losses in the typhoon hit areas.

Corn production this year is expected to increase by 5.47 million metric tons (MT), or 18.4 percent higher than last year's output of 4.63 million MT, Yap said in a report to Malacaang.

Philippine aftermath: The need for necessities

Baltimore, December 21, 2004 - At first glance, the roof appeared to have been ripped from a house and carried downstream in the typhoons and tropical storms that unleashed their fury in the northeastern region of the Philippines. The roof, a simple shingled structure lay slightly tilted, but amazingly undamaged to have been carried by torrents of water and winds that have claimed more than seven hundred people. Upon closer inspection, however, the realization sunk in: the roof was, in fact, still attached to the house...buried under nearly eight feet
