Philippines: Mindanao IDPs complain of neglect

MANILA, 24 December 2008 (IRIN) - Driven from their homes by conflict and living in evacuation centres, an increasing number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Mindanao feel neglected by their own government.

"They think we no longer exist because we are not seen on TV any more. But we're still here," Linog Macalig, a Maranao farmer, said from the town of Piagapo in the province of Lanao del Sur.

"We have appealed to the government but nobody seems to be listening to us. There is no relief assistance. It was only temporary. What can we do?"

Six civilians killed as rebels storm village in S. Philippines

COTABATO, Philippines, Dec 24, 2008 (Xinhua via COMTEX News Network) -- Separatist rebels Tuesday stormed a village in the restive southern Philippines and killed at least six civilians, officials said Wednesday.

A group of Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) members fired rockets and high-powered assorted weapons as they arrived at the village of Midtungo in Senator Ninoy Aquino town on Tuesday afternoon, said Julieto Ando, a local Army spokesperson.

MANILA, 23 December 2008 (IRIN) - Unidentified gunmen attacked a truck used by the UN's World Food Programme (WFP) on Mindanao island, leaving one Filipino aid worker dead and dashing any hopes for a Christmas truce.

The truck had just delivered food to hundreds of families displaced by fighting between the government and the separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) when it was ambushed near the town of Calanogas in Lanao del Sur Province on the evening of 21 December.

Philippines: Manila eyes fresh peace push with Muslim rebels

MANILA, Dec 23 (Reuters) - The Philippines made a fresh push to end 40 years of Muslim secessionist conflict in the country's south by forming a new negotiating panel on Tuesday, saying it hoped to resume peace talks in early 2009.

Two former lawmakers and a Muslim who is part of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's cabinet have been named to a panel that will try to convince the largest Muslim rebel group in the south, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF), to lay down their arms.

Gunmen fire on U.N. aid truck in Philippines, 1 dead

MANILA, Dec 22 (Reuters) - Gunmen opened fire on a delivery truck commissioned by the U.N. World Food Programme (WFP) in the southern Philippines, killing a truck helper in what was the first attack on any U.N. unit in the country, an official from the agency said on Monday.

The truck had just finished delivering bags of rice to temporary shelters in Muslim-dominated Lanao del Sur province and was returning to neighbouring Cotabato City on southern Mindanao island late on Sunday night when gunmen fired at the vehicle.

Two other men on the truck were not hurt, the WFP said.

Philippines: Internally displaced persons in Lanao del Norte return to their homes

(Social Marketing Service) 19 December 2008 - Social Welfare and Development Secretary Esperanza I. 150,000 Filipinos displaced by southern conflict return home

Philippines: Bunkhouses ease pressure on Mindanao schools

CENTRAL MINDANAO, 18 December 2008 (IRIN) - The government is erecting bunkhouses in conflict-affected Mindanao in a bid to decongest schools being used as evacuation centres.

Thousands of internally displaced people (IDPs) are being housed in schools on the southern island following an upsurge in fighting between government forces and the Muslim separatist Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) in August.

According to the National Disaster Coordination Council (NDCC), of the more than 300,000 displaced, some 75,000 are staying in evacuation centres, mainly schools.
