"Will you listen?" - Young voices from conflict zones

Preface

The 1996 UN report "The Impact of Armed Conflict on Children", widely known as the Machel study, for the first time brought the issues faced by children in armed conflict to international attention. Ten years later, a strategic review has now been convened to assess progress and look forward to identify key challenges and priorities for the future of the Children and Armed Conflict Agenda. The resulting report is to be presented to the General Assembly in October 2007, with the publication of more detailed analysis and findings to follow over the next year.

MANILA, Dec 13, 2007 (AFP) - The Philippine government has declared a Christmas truce in its 38-year fight against communist rebels, a senior aide to President Gloria Arroyo said Thursday.

There will be a "suspension of military operations" against the New People's Army (NP), the military wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines, from December 16 to January 6, Executive Secretary Eduardo Ermita told reporters.

The government has routinely declared an annual unilateral Christmas truce after failing to stamp out the 6,000-member NPA.
