Philippines: Commission allocates €2 M in humanitarian aid for victims of typhoons

Reference: IP/06/1908

Brussels, 29 December 2006. The European Commission has adopted a €2 million emergency decision for the victims of typhoons that have struck the Philippines over the last four months. The aid provided will focus on the provision of drinking water, hygiene promotion and sanitation activities, distribution of non-food items and shelter repair. The funding is channelled through the European Commission Humanitarian Aid department (ECHO), under the responsibility of Commissioner Louis Michel.

- Five (5) municipalities namely: Mondragon, Catarman, Pambujan, San Roque and Lope de Vega have been flooded due to 3 days continuous heavy rains which started since 27 December 2006.

- A total of 300 families or 2,000 persons coming from 18 barangays (13 in Catarman, 3 in Pambujan and 2 in Mondragon) are affected.

- Roads along Pambujan and Mondragon are impassable to traffic due to floodwaters

Philippines: Philip Morris and Red Cross distribute relief in Cam Sur

The Philippine National Red Cross (PNRC), together with Philip Morris, conducted a medical mission and relief operations in two areas in Camarines Sur last December 29. 3,000 dead, missing from Philippine disasters in 2006

MANILA, Dec 28, 2006 (AFP) - A series of natural disasters left more than 3,000 people dead or missing in the Philippines this year, the National Disaster Coordinating Council said Thursday.

Four typhoons towards the end of the year and a series of deadly mudslides left at least 1,312 people dead and 1,859 missing and believed dead, the civil defense agency said in its annual report.

The report said 1,158 people were killed and 891 were missing from typhoons Cimarron, Durian, Xangsane and Utor, which all hit the Philippines between October and December.

UN Central Emergency Response Fund commits $241 million to help disaster-hit areas

The United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF) has furnished $241 million to help provide relief to disaster-hit areas in some 30 countries since its establishment nine months ago, the world body's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) announced today.

Of the total, $164 million was disbursed from the rapid response facility for new or rapidly deteriorating emergencies in 24 countries. An additional $77 million from funds earmarked for under-funded emergencies was distributed across 16 countries. The total sum was used to support 328 projects.

Homeless for the holidays in the Philippines

Tens of thousands of people in the Philippines and Vietnam are spending the holidays in temporary shelters, following a series of deadly typhoons over the past few months, which caused major destruction in South East Asia.

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies is appealing for emergency funds to assist vulnerable storm survivors in both countries.

In Vietnam, around 200,000 homes were damaged when Typhoon Durian slammed into the Mekong Delta in early December.

Philippines: DILG conducts medical-dental mission for Bicol typhoon victims

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) dispatched to Albay yesterday (Dec. 27) a team of doctors, dentists and nurses from the Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) to conduct a medical-dental mission in the province for the benefit of the victims of typhoons "Reming"and "Seniang."

This DILG mission will also extend aid to BFP personnel who themselves became victims of the onslaught of the two consecutive typhoons.

Philippines: Contaminated water sparks disease in typhoon-affected Bicol

22 December 2006, Makati City. The government hospital in Daraga town is heaving. In fact, in the wake of typhoon Reming, one of the deadliest in recent times to strike the Philippines, it is running way over capacity. Christmas cheer blooms in Philippine typhoon
