The earliest recorded eruption of Mayon Volcano was on 19 February 1616 and the last was in 2001. Although the volcanic activity has resulted in billions of pesos in damage to property and life, Mayon Volcano is of great benefit to the people of the Philippines. The dengue burden: Analyzing its social, economic and epidemiological trends

Washington, DC, November 7, 2002 (PAHO) -- Dengue has become a major international public health problem, with a dramatic expansion in recent decades. The mosquito that transmits dengue is found in nearly 100 tropical countries. Every year, there are between 50 and 100 million new infections, with 250,000 to 500,000 cases of dengue hemorrhagic fever, which can be fatal. In view of the difficulties and the expenditures faced by countries with national programs to fight the mosquito, a vaccine against dengue would offer a possible speedy solution to control the problem globally.

Philippines: Speed up national road maintenance in typhoon-hit areas, Datumanong orders

Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Secretary Simeon A. Datumanong has ordered agency field officials to carry out immediate maintenance work on national roads damaged by monsoon rains and typhoons "Gloria" and "Hambalos" that recently hit the country.
Datumanong also directed DPWH maintenance crews to use all available equipment to clear national roads from landslides, debris and fallen trees.

Philippines: Tzu Chi volunteers distribute food to typhoon victims

CALASIAO, Philippines - The Philippines were continuously devastated in June and July by three typhoons, Chata'an, Nakri, and Halong. Pangasinan, on the main island of Luzon, suffered the greatest damage. On July 16, Tzu Chi volunteers drove for five hours from Manila to the disaster area to assess the extent of damage and the needs of the victims. On July 19, they went back and distributed rice, instant noodles, coffee, sugar, soap, and laundry detergent to 1200 victims in Calasiao city, Pangasinan.

Philippines: GSIS increases amount of emergency loan to members in calamity-hit areas

The Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) has increased the amount of emergency loan granted to members from P8,000 to P10,000 in areas hit by floods caused by monsoon rains and four successive typhoons.
In a report to Malacañang, GSIS President and General Manager Winston F. Garcia said that the GSIS board approved the P2,000 increase to provide ample financial assistance to GSIS members who have been affected by calamities such as typhoons, floods, or earthquakes.

Philippines: Gov't, private sector release P23M for relief, rehab of typhoon, flood victims

The government, in cooperation with the private sector, has released some P23.235 million for the relief and rehabilitation of families hard hit by typhoons and monsoon rains that lashed the country in the last two weeks.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), in an update this morning, said the amount was extended to flood victims through the combined resources of the DSWD, local government units (LGUs), non-government organizations (NGOs) and government organizations (GOs).
