Community and Family Services International (CFSI) -- a Philippines-based social development organization with twenty years of domestic and international experience with uprooted persons -- has received funds from the Post Conflict Fund of the World Bank for a pilot project amongst internally displaced persons in Mindanao. The global average surface temperature in 2001 is expected to be the second warmest on record, 0.42=B0C above the 1961-1990 average. The warmest year in the 1860 to present record occurred in 1998, according to records maintained by Members of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO). Nine of the ten warmest years have occurred since 1990, including 1999 and 2000, when the cooling influence of the tropical Pacific La Niña contributed to a somewhat lower global average (0.29=B0C and 0.26=B0C

UMCOR is sending a grant of $65,000 to the Florida Conference to assist with recovery from damage caused by Tropical Storm Gabrielle. The conference disaster response workers have identified 100 homes that need repairs and there are also many wells that were contaminated and must be restored. UMCOR has also sent recent grants to Cuba, the Bahamas, and Nicaragua--all of these areas suffered extensive damage from Hurricane Michelle. Church aids Philippines typhoon victims

Typhoon Lingling killed nearly 200 people and affected over one million when it struck the Philippines on November 6 and 7, 2001. FHI provided a Rapid Response Fund grant of $3,000 to the Worldwide Church of God, so that members of local congregations could help their neighbours weather the initial days after the storm.
Church members purchased and distributed rice, noodles, tins of sardines and assorted medicines and first aid items to 348 families in the hardest hit area, Mahinog municipality in Camiguin Province.

Typhoon Lingling cut a destructive swathe across south-east Asia this month leaving at least 172 people dead and damaging thousands of homes in the Philippines and Vietnam. None of the 10,000 homes built by the International Federation and the Vietnam Red Cross in the Central Provinces, following serious flooding in 1998 and 1999, were affected in any way. Fresh floods leave one missing in Philippine disaster island

MANILA, Nov 15 (AFP) - Fresh floods left one person missing and caused several hundred others to flee their homes in the southern island of Camiguin, which was devastated by tropical storm Lingling last week, a Philippine official said Thursday.

Waist-high floodwaters swept through the provincial capital of Mambajao on Wednesday night after heavy rain, Camiguin governor Pedro Romualdo said on ABS-CBN television.

"Three people aboard a motorcycle were hit by the onrushing water," he said. "Two of them were able to escape the danger but one is still missing."

Typhoon Lingling slams into Vietnam's central coast

At least 20 people died and 12,000 homes were flooded as Typhoon Lingling came ashore on Vietnam's central coastline early Monday morning.

The winds and rains sank over 230 small fishing boats and damaged nearly 500 hectares of crops, over 3000 hectares of orchards and some 70% of local paddies. The total damage caused by the storm is estimated at some US$12 million, according to early reports from the National Committee for Storm and Flood Control.

Typhoon Lingling (also known as Nanang) hit The Philippines on Tuesday, November 6 killing at least 200 people and leaving 177 missing and presumed dead. Some 173,000 families were affected in the Visayas and Mindanao regions. Worst hit was Camiguin, an island off Cagayan de Oro City in Mindanao, The Philippines where more than 7,000 families were affected. Damage to infrastructure, crops, and private property was estimated by the government at over $7 million. Officials are busy burying the dead for fear of a health epidemic, which is possible if the water system is not repaired soon.

Disaster officials in Vietnam said Tuesday (Nov. 13) that the death toll from Typhoon Lingling had reached 20, with at least 83 others injured. The storm ripped through central Vietnam on Monday, destroying thousands of homes in seven provinces, the Associated Press reported.
The water department for Central Vietnam reported that 15,000 homes were damaged or destroyed, and the initial damage estimate for the country was $25 million.

Weakened tropical storm Lingling kills three in Vietnam

HANOI, Nov 12 (AFP) - Tropical storm Lingling, which left more than 300 people dead or missing in the Philippines, killed three people as it made landfall in central Vietnam early Monday, disaster relief officials said.

Winds of 120 kilometres (75 miles) an hour destroyed some homes and downed power and telephone lines.

But the feared downpours and flash flooding failed to materialize as the storm weakened sharply before making landfall, the weather centre said.

Philippines: GMA hands over another P6M as aid to Camiguin

MAHINOG, Camiguin - President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo today turned over a total of P6 million as additional financial assistance to the typhoon-ravaged province of Camiguin.
The President went to Camiguin to see for herself the immediate needs of the people and provide help to those affected by the flash flood that swept the province.

The President also announced that the United States government, through US Embassy Charges D' Affaires Robert Fitts, will turn over today a plane load of relief goods also intended for the victims of typhoon "Nanang" here.

CAGAYAN DE ORO CITY - President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo today received from the United States government a truckload of relief goods intended for the victims of typhoon "Nanang."

Stench of death raises epidemic fears in storm-hit Philippines

CAMIGUIN, Philippines, Nov 10 (AFP) - Philippine authorities have halted their search for survivors and are frantically burying bodies in a bid to prevent an epidemic of disease after tropical storm Lingling left at least 200 people dead, officials said Saturday.

Pedro Romualdo, the governor of this southern island, said there was a "very strong stench" in the area that was hit prompting emergency workers to make an extra effort to recover bodies.

Philippines cleans up after storm; Toll nearly 360

MAHINOG, Philippines (Reuters) - Villagers in the Philippines buried their dead in mass graves Friday and began cleaning up as tropical storm Lingling swirled into the South China Sea leaving a trail of death and destruction in its wake.

Disaster officials said that the final death toll could be 359, with at least 130 bodies so far recovered in four provinces in the southern and central parts of the archipelago and 229 people buried under a mudslide and presumed dead.

The government said flooding also damaged sugar and rice crops in the central Philippines.
