Smoke haze seeps across South-East Asia as fires continue burning

The haze from uncontrolled fires in Indonesia has spread to Thiland and the Philippines as smog-shrouded Southeast Asian countries brace for a tourism slowdown.

Australia, the United States, Britain, Germany and Denmark have issued travel advisories warning their nationals about the impact of the smog.

President Suharto, has apologised to neighbouring countries saying the fire are a national disaster.

Schools and airports throughout the region have been closed and at least 50,000 Indonesians have sought medical treatment.

General situation

1. According to the UNDP/DHA Resident Representative in Manila, on 18 August 1997, fringes of Typhoon Winnie together with torrential monsoon rains hit several regions in the Philippines, causing flooding, in particular in the northwestern and northcentral regions,including the Luzon region and the Metro Manila area, and parts of Visayas and Mindanao.
