Asia Pacific Food Situation Update - May 2013

Wheat and rice prices mostly fall around the region

Strong production generally kept domestic prices around the region stable or drove them slightly down for wheat, wheat flour and rice, except in India and Myanmar where government procurement programmes pushed prices higher. Overall, however, prices were mostly higher than at the same time last year, according to FAO’s Global Information and Early Warning System (GIEWS).

  1. Initial Report re Flashflood in Damulog, Bukidnon
  • On or about 4:00 PM 10 May 2013, a flash flood occurred due to continuous heavy rains in Sitio Dansolihon, Brgy. Composteia, Damulog, Bukidnon.

  • According to investigation, four children were playing in a dead creek in the said area when the flash flood happened which resulted to the death of a certain Raymart Ruta, 5 y/o, after being carried away by the flood

ACTIONS TAKEN:

  • Damulog Rescue Team conducted flood assessment.

NDRRMC Update: SitRep No.08 re Effects of Mayon Volcano Activity

II. EFFECTS

On the day of the ash explosion, there were a total of twenty-one (21 reported multi-national tourists and local climbers within the six (6) km Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ). Of this number, five (5) were reported dead, nine (9) were injured, and seven (7) were unharmed.

On or about about 1:40 PM, 09 May 2013 the five (5) cadavers had been brought down to TOG 5 by two (2) helicopters and were immediately transported to a local funeral parlor.

II. EFFECTS

On the day of the ash explosion, there were a total of twenty-one (21) reported multi-national tourists and local climbers within the six (6) km Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ). Of this number, five (5) were reported dead, nine (9) were injured, and seven (7) were unharmed.

On the day of the ash explosion, there were a total of twenty-one (21) reported multi-national tourists and local climbers within the six (6) km Permanent Danger Zone (PDZ). The missing Thai National was rescued alive but suffered burn injuries and broken right arm while the other five (5) missing unidentified individuals were already identified and found unharmed.

Camindangan, Sipalay City, Negros Occidental burning two (2) employees bunkhouse/barracks, one (1) unit Kubota tractor with drilling machine, one (1) unit computer, one (1) unit generator set, an ICOM radio and other personal belongings of employees.

  1. BACKGROUND

At 8:00 AM, 7 May 2013, Mayon Volcano produced a small phreatic event that lasted about 73 seconds. The gray to brown clouds reached 500 meters above the summit. No volcanic earthquake was detected within the past twenty-four (24) hours observation period. Seismic and gas emission parameters remain within background levels and indicate no intensification of volcanic activity.

Highlights

  • Annual headline inflation rate decreased from 3.4 percent in February to 3.2 percent in March.

  • On a month-on-month basis, CPI increased by 0.1 percent.

  • Food and non-alcoholic beverages index decreased by 0.1 percent and 2.8 percenet, on a month-onmonth and year-on year basis, respectively.

  • Most oil companies implemented a price rollback of Php0.25 per liter for gasoline and Php 0.55 per liter for diesel.

Davao City, PHILIPPINES – Engaging government and non-government partners to outline short term to medium term plans, the National WASH Cluster, co-led by the Department of Health (DoH) and United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), held a twoday National Strategic Planning workshop, 4-5 April 2013.
