TUGUEGARAO CITY, Cagayan, July 4 (PIA) - - The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) region 2 is installing 30 siren warning posts all over Cagayan Valley which is targeted to be completed before the year ends.

John Michael Taguiam, regional disaster action officer, said they have already installed six flood warning posts in this province, strategically stationed at the flood vulnerable towns of the province.

Interior and Local Government Officer-in-Charge Catalino S. Cuy is assuring victims of the 6.5 earthquake that hit Leyte and nearby provinces last July 6 that the government is rallying all its resources for their aid.

Cuy said that around two weeks after the earthquake, various agencies of the government are still on their toes to make certain that all of the immediate needs of the victims are provided for.

INCIDENT BACKGROUND

Firefights broke out in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur on the afternoon of 23 May 2017 when members of the Maute Group (MG) ambushed a military vehicle that was reportedly on a mission to serve a warrant of arrest upon Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) leader Isnilon Hapilon, who was believed to be hiding in the area. The Maute group is a local armed group that has engaged in armed clashes with government troops since early 2016, and has pledged allegiance to the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS).

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) continues to carry out operations to assist the local government of Ormoc City, Leyte in its efforts to secure the safety of residents and minimize their fear of possible aftershocks. The goal of the LGU is to convince residents to leave their communities which are in within the area of the July 6 earthquake fault line.

Last week, around 180 affected families from high ground Barangay Ga-as were transferred to the gymnasium of Barangay Dolores to protect from possible strong aftershocks and possible landslides.

Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi assured on Tuesday that the rehabilitation of power facilities in Region 8 and Bohol damaged by a 6.5 magnitude earthquake last July 6 is continuing and is on schedule.

He said, that the “Build-back Better Principle” is being applied by industry participants to ensure that the facilities will be more “disaster-resilient.”

As of 8 am on Tuesday, the DOE consolidated report stated that Leyte and Samar received 94.5 megawatts (MW) of power.

  • Since the outburst of Marawi fighting, in Mindanao of the Philippines, 471 000 people have been displaced and are hosted by families or evacuation centres in surrounding municipalities.

  • The displacement has put the IDPs and host families into a precarious situation, with overwhelming threats of humanitarian nature, including the spread of epidemics. Between 26 May and 28 June, nine confirmed cases of cholera were reported in the municipalities of Iligan, Saguiaran and Balo-i.

Kuala Lumpur, 14th July 2017 – On 6th July 2017, a 6.5 magnitude earthquake occurred in the island of Leyte in the Philippines, causing major damages in Barangays of Ormoc City particularly upland Barangays including six upland Barangays namely Tongonan, Cabaon-an, Milagro, Lake Danao, Cabintan and Gaas. Over 700 aftershocks have been recorded (ranging from magnitude 1.5 to 5.8), including a major aftershock measuring 5.8 magnitude (previously pegged at 5.4) on the 10th of July, in the days that followed.
