Operational Updates

  • WFP reached 70,125 people in March – this includes 62,608 school children from 269 primary schools in Central Mindanao who were provided with hot, nutritious meals, and 7,517 children aged 6-23 months who received specialised nutritious food to prevent the long-term negative effects of inadequate nutrition during the first 1,000 days of life.

  • At 5:21 AM, 12 April 2017, a moderate earthquake of magnitude 6.0 shook the island of Mindanao. The epicenter is located 13 km northwest of Wao, Lanao del Sur at a depth of 1 km. The earthquake was generated by the movement of a northwest trending active fault in the area.

Relief assistance continues to pour in Lanao del Sur almost a week after the 6.0-magnitude earthquake that hit the municipality of Wao leaving several damaged houses and infrastructures.

Families living in communities along the coastal areas in the municipalities of Tingloy, Mabini, Lemery, Taal, and San Luis in Batangas Province who took pre-emptive evacuation for fear of Tsunami as a result of the earthquake on April 8 have already returned to their respective houses.

Although the situation in the province is starting to normalize, the DSWD-Field Office (FO) CALABARZON is still closely coordinating with concerned Local Government U nits (LGUs) to assess the status of affected families and determine their needs.

11 February – Surigao City is placed under state of calamity

16 February – IFRC approved a http://reliefweb.int/node/DREF allocation worth CHF 127,672

5 March – a magnitude 5.9 aftershock strikes the area. Since the M 6.7 earthquake, almost 300 aftershocks have been reported

The monitored Low Pressure Area (LPA) was estimated based on all available data at 900 km East of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur (8.0°N, 134.5°E).

14 April 2017
The LPA 'f'as estimated based on all available data at 615 km East of Surigao City, Suriga9 del Sur (9'.8°N, 131.0°E) at 10:00 AM.

At 4:00 AM, the LPA developed into a Tropical Depression (TD) and was named "CRISING".

The monitored Low Pressure Area (LPA) was estimated based on all available data at 900 km East of Hinatuan, Surigao del Sur (8.0N, 134.5E) at 10:00AM. The weather disturbance is expected to bring moderate to occasionally heavy rains and thunderstorms over Eastern Visayas, Southern Luzon, and Northern Mindanao by weekend. It is possible to intensify into a tropical depression within the next 24 hours.

I. SITUATION OVERVIEW:

  • A phenomenon called earthquake swarm is currently happening at Batangas. An earthquake swarm is a burst of earthquake activity clustered in a specific area in a short period of time due to movement of a fault. The Batangas swarm started on 04 April at 8:58 PM and is still ongoing to date.

  • The following are the recorded earthquakes with the magnitude of 4.0 and above, which occurred in the province since 04 April 2017.
