Washington, D.C. (21 de agosto de 2007) - El Secretario General de la Organización de los Estados Americanos (OEA) y el presidente de la junta directiva de la Fundación Panamericana para el Desarrollo (FUPAD), José Miguel Insulza, anunció el día de hoy que la OEA y FUPAD han reunido a varios socios del sector privado para aportar más de $155,000 dólares en ayuda a los esfuerzos de alivio en Perú. El reciente terremoto que alcanzó 8.0 puntos en la escala Richter ha causado cientos de muertes, ha dejado a más de 17,000 personas sin hogar y a muchas otras sin los servicios básicos.

Lima, Peru, August 21, 2007 - CARE assessment teams in the communities hardest hit by Wednesday's 8.0-magnitude earthquake along the south coast of Peru report that an estimated 30,000 families are without homes, and 80 percent of the buildings in Pisco and 25 percent in Ica have collapsed. Access to water, food and medical treatment is limited throughout the area.

(August 21, 2007)- The Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS) and PADF Chairman, José Miguel Insulza, announced today that the OAS and the Pan American Development Foundation (PADF) have rallied several private sector partners to join them in providing more than $155,000 in support of relief efforts in Peru. The recent earthquake that measured 8.0 on the Richter scale has killed hundreds, left more than 17,000 people homeless and many more cut off from basic services.

As hope faded in finding survivors, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Tuesday was dispatching emergency aid to the stricken South American country of Peru.

Tents, blankets and sleeping mats were being flown from JICA's Miami warehouse to the capital, Lima, and then to the most badly affected areas of the country.

The massive 8.0 magnitude tremor struck Peru on August 15 leaving more than 500 people dead and thousands homeless in the Ica region south of the capital.

The Humanitarian Aid team of six experts sent to Peru after the violent earthquake on 15 August is continuing its mission in the Pisco and Ica region south of Lima. In tandem with emergency measures, it is already preparing the subsequent reconstruction phases in close cooperation with the SDC's Cooperation Office in Lima and with its local and international partners.

The initial emergency aid provided by the experts included the distribution of plastic sheeting to about 12,000 families in rural districts of Ica whose homes were destroyed.
