Zika virus – Incidence and trends

To date, 47 countries and territories in the Americas have confirmed autochthonous, vectorborne transmission of Zika virus disease since 2015. In addition, five countries in the Americas have reported sexually transmitted Zika cases. Since the last Zika Epidemiological Update of 8 September 2016, Saint Kitts and Nevis has confirmed vector-borne autochthonous transmission of Zika virus.

Highlighted below is a summary of the Zika epidemiological situation by sub-regions of the Americas.

HAITI

The first case of the Mayaro virus disease was detected. This disease is transmitted by the "Aedes aegypti" mosquito, the same transmitter of zika, dengue, yellow fever and chikungunya, among others.

This virus has the same symptoms of the above mentioned diseases: fever, fatigue and pain in joints and muscles. There is no specific treatment or vaccine to prevent this virus.

Detectan en Haití un primer caso de virus mayaro. Esta enfermedad es transmitida por el mosquito "Aedes aegypti", el mismo que transmite zika, dengue, fiebre amarilla y chikungunya.
Este virus tiene los mismos síntomas de las anteriores enfermedades, como fiebre, mareo, sensación de fatiga y dolor en las articulaciones.
No existe tratamiento específico o vacuna para prevenir este virus.

Situation summary in the Americas

  • In 2015, three countries in the Americas confirmed circulation of yellow fever virus:
    Bolivia reported epizootic and Brazil and Peru reported human cases.

  • In 2016, as of epidemiological week (EW) 34, three countries had reported jungle yellow fever: Brazil, Colombia, and Peru. Distribution of cases by epidemiological week (EW) is presented in Figure 1.

Equipo GIRED y de la Dirección Desconcentrada de Loreto del Instituto Nacional de Defensa Civil – INDECI, verifica la entrega de Bienes de Ayuda Humanitaria en la ciudad de Iquitos, tras los daños ocasionados por los vientos fuertes y lluvias el pasado fin de semana.

En el distrito de Punchana, hasta el momento se ha entregado un total de 700 planchas de calamina para atender a 46 familias damnificadas. Además se han entregado 225 planchas de calamina en el distrito de Belén.
