27 July 2017, GENEVA – The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR) today warned of a possible rise in heatwave deaths as climate change drives record warmth around the world, epitomised by the 54ºC recorded in Kuwait last week.
Six richest countries host less than 9% of refugees – Oxfam
The six wealthiest countries – which make up more than half the global economy - host less than nine percent of the world’s refugees while poorer countries are shouldering most of the responsibility, Oxfam said today.
While Germany has recently welcomed far more refugees than the other richest nations, there remains a major gap with poorer countries hosting the vast majority of refugees.
The 2015 Annual Report on the Situation of Asylum in the European Union aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the number and nature of applications for international protection made in the EU+ (1). It examines how those applications were processed and indicates important developments at EU+ and national level in order to describe the functioning of the Common European Asylum System (CEAS) in each of its key aspects.

Trends on sea arrivals
Between 13 and 19 June, some 405 refugees and migrants arrived by sea in Greece. This is a slight increase from the previous week when 358 people arrived to the Greek shores. For the fourth time in the last ten days, there were 40-60 daily new arrivals to Samos.

With a multitude of conflicts and crises causing record displacement around the world, resettlement has become an increasingly vital part of UNHCR’s efforts to find solutions and advocate for fairer responsibility-sharing for refugees, a UNHCR report released today at an annual meeting in Geneva says.
The global terrorist threat continued to evolve rapidly in 2015, becoming increasingly decentralized and diffuse. Terrorist groups continued to exploit an absence of credible and effective state institutions, where avenues for free and peaceful expression of opinion were blocked, justice systems lacked credibility, and where security force abuses and government corruption went unchecked.
Trends on sea arrivals
So far this year, 203,981 people made the journey to seek safety in Europe. Almost three-quarters of these had travelled from Turkey to Greece prior to the end of March. Since March arrivals in the eastern Mediterranean route have decreased by 95.32%. In May 1,465 of people arrived to Greece by sea this is 40.13% less than in the previous month (3,650 arrivals).

Migratory flows to Europe: new dimensions to deep-rooted patterns
In 2015, Member States reported more than 1 820 000 detections of illegal border-crossing along the external borders.
This never-before-seen figure was more than six times the number of detections reported in 2014, which was itself an unprecedented year, with record monthly averages observed since April 2014.
Asylum seekers and other migrants are arriving in Europe and encountering rapidly changing border controls as they seek transit through Europe. The EU is implementing its “hotspot” approach for new arrival registration in Italy and Greece. This is a snapshot of the situation based on available unclassified data as of March 4, 2016.
Italy witnessed a 43% rise of sea arrivals over the last month, compared to December 2014, bucking the seasonal decrease of refugees and migrants arriving by sea and the downward trend registered in the second half of 2015. Arrival trends for December include the steady decrease of Syrians arriving by sea and the continuing proportional increase of Nigerians.
At the end of December 2015, the total number of arrivals stands at 153,842 persons, compared to 170,100 in 2014 at the same time, corresponding to a 10% decrease.

In 2015, 21 countries were witness to suicide bomb attacks – the most countries ever impacted by this form of violence.
This finding by Action on Armed Violence (AOAV) comes from their Global Explosive Violence Monitor. This monitor charts media reports of explosive harm suffered by civilians around the world.
AOAV’s data on suicide bombings for 2015 shows that:

Arrival trends for November include the steady decrease of Syrians arriving by sea, a slight drop of Sudanese as well as a continuing proportional increase of Nigerian nationals.
In November 43 asylum-seekers were relocated to France, Spain, Germany and Sweden under the EU relocation scheme.

Aid groups and governments worldwide intensified efforts Sunday to help earthquake-hit Nepal, but blocked roads, downed power lines and overcrowded hospitals posed formidable challenges in an already poor country.
As the death toll in the Himalayan nation surpassed 2,500, the US together with European and Asian nations sent emergency crews to reinforce those scrambling to find survivors in the devastated capital Kathmandu and in cut-off rural areas.
