Between January 2015 and September 2016, more than 664,500 refugee and migrant children claimed asylum in Europe. This represents around a third of all asylum claims registered in Europe during the same period of time.

Around half of all refugee and migrant children sought international protection in Germany.
Other countries, which have recorded high numbers of asylum claims by children are Sweden, Hungary, Austria, France, Switzerland and Belgium.

As France prepares to close down the squalid 'Jungle' migrant camp in the northern port of Calais, Amjad from Pakistan can't wait to get away.

"That's six months they have been telling us that the 'Jungle' is done with... but it never ends," he told AFP.

"Everyone here knows that they will soon have to leave and are wondering what they are going to do," he said. "Me, I'll take the train to Paris."

The squalid migrant camp known as the "Jungle" in France's northern port of Calais has become home to nearly 1,000 more people since August, bringing the total to more than 10,000, two charities working there said Monday.

"The total number of people is 10,088. The previous count was 9,106, making it an increase of 12 percent in a month," according to the French association L'Auberge des Migrants and the British non-governmental organisation Help Refugees.

The six wealthiest countries – which make up more than half the global economy - host less than nine percent of the world’s refugees while poorer countries are shouldering most of the responsibility, Oxfam said today.

While Germany has recently welcomed far more refugees than the other richest nations, there remains a major gap with poorer countries hosting the vast majority of refugees.

Trends on sea arrivals

So far this year, 203,981 people made the journey to seek safety in Europe. Almost three-quarters of these had travelled from Turkey to Greece prior to the end of March. Since March arrivals in the eastern Mediterranean route have decreased by 95.32%. In May 1,465 of people arrived to Greece by sea this is 40.13% less than in the previous month (3,650 arrivals).
