Ireland to provide €5 million in fight to eradicate Polio

The Tánaiste and Minister for Foreign Affairs and Trade, Eamon Gilmore T.D., and the Minister for Trade and Development, Joe Costello T.D, have announced new Irish support for the global effort to end polio.

Speaking at the Global Vaccine Summit in Abu Dhabi today, Minister Costello pledged that, through Irish Aid, the Government will provide €5 million over the next five years to eradicate the disease.

Ireland Donates €70 Million to Emergency Appeals

It was announced today that Ireland has donated more than €70 million to Red Cross emergency appeals over the last 10 years. Speaking at the Irish Red Cross in Dublin, Annita Underlin - Director of the International Federation of the Red Cross and Red Crescent’s Europe Zone, said that, ‘the generosity of the Irish public has literally changed thousands if not millions of lives around the world’.

Secretary-General: Good morning, ladies and gentlemen. It is a great pleasure to see you. I am sorry that I couldn't have a press conference with you last month, because of my very hectic schedule. I am pleased to have this monthly regular press conference today.

Yesterday, as you know, I briefed the General Assembly on the latest developments regarding the H1N1 epidemic.

As you know, this outbreak is yet another reminder that we live an interconnected world. A threat to one country is a threat to all, requiring a collective, global response.
