Around 6.5 million people were newly displaced, almost twice as many as the 3.5 million during 2011. The conflicts in Syria and DRC were responsible for around half of the new displacements.

People internally displaced by conflict and violence

For the last 14 years, the Norwegian Refugee Council’s Internal Displacement Monitoring Centre has monitored intern- al displacement resulting from conflict and violence across the world. In 2011, the number of people internally displaced by these causes stood at 26.4 million.

- The FAO Food Price Index continued to rise in November.

- International prices of wheat and rice increased significantly in November and early December. Prices of maize remained firm.

- In Asia, prices of rice further strengthened in the past month while prices of wheat remained high.

- In Africa, prices of cereals are declining or stable and at low levels in all sub-regions.

- In Central America, prices of beans are at record levels. Prices of maize that had seasonally declined remained generally stable.

The Secretary-General hereby transmits the report prepared by the World Health Organization in accordance with General Assembly resolution 63/234.

Summary

The present report highlights the progress made in meeting the goals concerning malaria to be achieved by 2010 in the context of General Assembly resolution 62/180. The report is based primarily on data collected for the World Malaria Report 2009, which will be published by the World Health Organization (WHO) in late October 2009.

In 2008, armed conflicts and other situations of violence shattered the lives of large numbers of children, women and men in many countries among which the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Georgia, Pakistan, Somalia, Sri Lanka, the Philippines, Chad and Colombia. Direct attacks on civilian communities, general insecurity and the destruction of livelihoods forced innumerable civilians to flee their homes. With its Message on the Continuation of Technical Cooperation and Financial Aid for Developing Countries 2009 - 2012, the Federal Council presented a unified strategy for the Swiss Government's development cooperation as a whole.

By means of this Message, the Federal Council gears Swiss development cooperation to three priorities:

- reducing poverty;

- reducing security risks;

- co-shaping a form of globalization that promotes development.

Four-and-a-half billion Swiss francs have been allocated for this work for the period 2009-2012.
