Highlights 

- As of 27 October, a total of 764,150 migrants crossed Libya’s borders.* This figure includes 314,826 TCNs, which represent 45% of total crossings. Movements still continue, with another 12,878 migrants (774 TCNs) crossing the borders to Tunisia, Egypt and Niger between 21 and 27 October.

Summary:

A second devastating drought catastrophe is emerging on the African continent. The West African countries in the Sahel zone, namely Mali, Niger and Burkina Faso, are the worst hit, and this will lead to a grave shortage of food in spring 2012. The latest rainy season in these countries was poor and the number of crops harvested to date lies well below the normal yield.

Key Messages

Cereal prices remained almost stable in the past few months mainly thanks to good food availability on the markets resulting from good harvests in the 2010.

Although food security is generally good, some 2.3 million people are classified as food insecure, with poor and vulnerable groups in southern regions most affected.

Civil insecurity is increasing due to the return of armed groups from Libya.

• Les résultats de la campagne 2011/12 sont globalement moyens pour les cultures céréalières (mil et sorgho) et bons pour les cultures de rente (niébé, arachide, sésame et souchet). 

• Toutefois, les productions attendues en mil et sorgho sont estimées médiocres à nulles dans la majeure partie de la région de Tillabéri où les ménages pauvres seront confrontés à des déficits alimentaires.  

• Les chenilles mineuses ont été signalées dans la région de Maradi avec des pertes moyennes enregistrées localement.
