- Poor urban households and food‐deficit rural households have limited access to staple foodstuffs in the face of above average prices on markets across the country.

The synchronized cross-border initiative will take place in eight countries simultaneously: Benin, Burkina Faso, Côte d'Ivoire, Ghana, Mali, Niger, Togo, and Nigeria.

The goal of the campaign is to reach every child, even in the most remote rural areas or in the most populated urban areas. More than 162,000 trained immunizers (67,000 for Nigeria alone)

Four air operations - for Central African Republic, Chad, Niger and the coastal countries Côte d'Ivoire, Guinea, Liberia and Sierra Leone - transport humanitarian workers and often emergency aid supplies in areas where roads are poor or non-existent and commercial flights are unavailable.

The cholera outbreak in Zimbabwe continues to be of high concern for the humanitarian community. A high level UN Humanitarian mission is now in the country to assess and discuss the problem with the national authorities on the way forward to tackle the disease. The joint military operations (DRC and Rwanda) are still on-going in eastern DRC. Security situation in CAR is still a major concern.

Disputes over natural resources in Africa have indeed exacerbated over the last few decades and often occur as a result of pressure exerted by overpopulation on a shrinking natural resource. This in return leads to overuse, unfair and unequal distribution and mismanagement of the said resources.

In Kenya, for example, a dispute over

"We are supporting teams from the Ministry of Health, giving advice, investigating infected homes and giving medicine and vaccinations," said Garba Soga, prevention control manager with the World Health Organization (WHO) in Niger.

"WHO has made available 800,000 doses of the VAM A+C vaccine [used to prevent two strains of meningitis]," he added.

Niger's population is 13.7 million.
