LIBERIA: At least 40,000 displaced in latest fighting

At least 40,000 people have been displaced in Liberia by the latest fighting between government troops and rebels in central Bong County, humanitarian sources in the capital, Monrovia, told IRIN on Friday.

More displacement was expected as the fighting intensified around the town of Gbarnga, 160 km north of Monrovia, the sources added. The majority of the displaced were moving south to Margibi

LIBERIA: Au moins 40 000 déplacés par les derniers combats

Au moins 40 000 personnes ont été déplacées par les derniers combats au Liberia entre les troupes gouvernementales et les rebelles dans le comté de Bong, ont déclaré vendredi à IRIN des travailleurs humanitaires dans la capitale, Monrovia.

Il était attendu qu'un nouveau déplacement ait lieu à mesure que les combats s'intensifiaient autour de la localité

Operational Developments

In 2001, West Africa continued to undergo many socio-economic and political problems which spilled over into ethnic conflict based on mainly sectarian lines. Nigeria was a case in point, since the imposition of Sharia law there continued to create tension between Christians and Muslims. Street riots were reported in the city of Maiduguri and other places.
