New Caledonia dengue outbreak kills three

NOUMEA, New Caledonia, April 26, 2013 (AFP) - A dengue fever outbreak in the Pacific islands of New Caledonia has killed three people, officials said Friday, after the World Health Organization raised alarm over the spread of the virus.

A 55-year-old woman from the northern village of Pouembout who was taken to hospital with haemorrhaging became the latest victim of the outbreak, which has killed two other women, aged 55 and 36, since December.

The French island territory has registered some 8,250 dengue cases since September 2012.

Dengue epidemic hits New Caledonia

So far there has been cases reported in the Federated States of Micronesia and the Cook Islands.

But the fever is already at epidemic levels in New Caledonia with 127 cases of type-one recorded last month, and 34 cases so far this month.

NOUMEA, New Caledonia (Oceania Flash, Mar. 24) - Health authorities in New Caledonia have renewed warnings of an increased risk of dengue fever and leptospirosis, just over a week after cyclone Erica caused extensive damaged to the French Pacific territory, the daily newspaper Les Nouvelles Calédoniennes reports.

On March 14, cyclone Erica caused millions of dollars in damages to infrastructure, killed two, and injured nearly a hundred.

NOUMEA, March 15 (AFP) - New Caledonia began Saturday to assess the massive damage caused when powerful cyclone Erica lashed the French Pacific territory, killing two people.

Cyclone Erica leaves one dead, 15 injured in New Caledonia

NOUMEA, March 14 (AFP) - One person was killed and 15 injured, three seriously, as a powerful cyclone hit the French Pacific territory of New Caledonia on Friday, officials said.

The dead man worked for a building firm and fell while trying to secure sheet metal ahead of the arrival of Cyclone Erica, they said.

Erica, packing winds of up to 150 kilometres (100 miles) per hour, has disrupted communications and transport links, uprooted trees and carried away roofs of houses and public buildings.

Alert lifted in New Caledonia as tropical depression passes

NOUMEA, Jan 31 (AFP) - A maximum alert has been lifted in New Caledonia after a tropical depression left the area without causing any damage, the high commission announced on Friday.

The alert was lifted at 6:30 pm (0730 GMT), the commission said, with former Cyclone Beni, downgraded to a strong tropical depression overnight, about 80 kilometres (50 miles) south of the French Pacific territory and heading out to sea.

NOUMEA, New Caledonia (RNZI, January 31) - Parts of New Caledonia were on alert as Cyclone Beni moved in a southeast direction at about 15 kilometers an hour. But weather experts said the storm was weakening and may move away from the islands.

Pacific islands on maximum alert as cyclone approaches

NOUMEA, Jan 30 (AFP) - A set of islands to the east of New Caledonia were placed on maximum alert Thursday as tropical Cyclone Beni approached, according to the high commissioner in Noumea.
The Loyaute islands were placed on the maximum number two alert level at 6:00 am (1900 GMT Wednesday) even though Beni's strength was said to be be falling slightly.

It is still whipping up large waves with average wind speeds of 185 kilometres (110 miles) per hour and gusts reaching 285 kilometres per hour at its centre.

The government aid agency, NZAID has so far provided more than $150,000 for the Fiji and Solomon Islands relief effort following Cyclone Ami and Cyclone Zoe, Foreign Minister Phil Goff and Aid Minister Marian Hobbs said today.

NOUMEA, Jan 29 (AFP) - Eastern parts of the French Pacific territory New Caledonia were on alert Wednesday for the approach of powerful Cyclone Beni.
Authorities issued a low-level alert Wednesday afternoon as the intensity of the tropical storm increased substantially over the past 24 hours, whipping up huge waves with average wind speeds of 200 kilometres per hour (124 miles) and gusts reaching 300 kilometres per hour at its centre.

Cyclone Sose born near Vanuatu, tracking west and south

AUCKLAND, April 6 (AFP) - A tropical cyclone, Sose, was declared Friday north of Vanuatu.

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center in Honolulu said Sose, also known as TC 19P, was formed out of a two day old tropical storm and was centred in the southern Coral Sea, just north of Vanuatu.

"TC 19P should drift westward over the next 24 hours before showing a more southwestward track," the Center said, adding the storm will bring 3.6 metre (12 foot) high waves.

It is currently producing maximum sustained winds of 35 knots (64 kilometres per hour) with gusts to 45 knots (83 kph),
