Twenty-one million children in school thanks to efforts

NEW YORK, 17 June 2013 – UNICEF, the Nelson Mandela Foundation and the Peter Krämer Foundation today kicked off a new fundraising drive to raise US$80 million to help Africa’s girls, orphans, children living in extreme poverty and other vulnerable children go to school and get a quality education.

HIGHLIGHTS

Mozambique:

Since the beginning of a cholera outbreak in Mozambique in early January 2013, a total of 1,861 cases and 19 deaths have been recorded nationally as at 31 May 2013 (CFR=1%). The outbreak is considered over all provinces except Niassa, although zero cases have been reported there during the past few weeks.

Madagascar:

A new Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) and Climate Change Adaptation (CCA) Technical Centre for Southern Africa, called DIMSUR was launched early this month in Maputo attended by high level government officials from Madagascar, Malawi, Mozambique and the Union of Comoros.

• This Emergency Appeal was initially launched on 17 October 2012 for CHF 1,025,310 for 9 months to assist 3,500 households (17,500 beneficiaries).

Fish is a critical source of dietary protein in sub-Saharan Africa, providing an estimated 22% of protein intake. But with marine fisheries over-exploited, African fish production is failing to keep up with rising populations. How should that gap be filled to protect this vital source of nutrition?

The first round of presidential election is currently scheduled to be held on 24 July 2013. No decision yet on whether it will be postponed or not.

• Namibia:

On 17 May 2013 the President declared a national drought emergency and called for assistance from international community. An estimated 330,925 people have now been classified as food insecure - 14 percent of Namibia's 2,324 million people (total population)
