ANGOLA: Sanctions' enforcement measures urged
A report by the UN's sanctions monitoring team for Angola has recommended that the Security Council consider action against countries violating the arms and trade embargo on the UNITA rebel movement, a UN statement said.

MALAWI: Former minister arrested on corruption charges
Former transport minister and a senior ruling United Democratic Front (UDF) official, Brown Mpinganjira, was arrested on Wednesday in the commercial capital Blantyre in connection with allegations of fraud and corruption while he was in government, PANA reported. Police spokesman Oliver Soko told PANA that Mpinganjira was arrested and charged with official corruption and accepting bribe money.

AFRICA: Kaunda urges politicians to take AIDS test

Former Zambian ruler Kenneth Kaunda on Friday urged African politicians to take AIDS tests before seeking office to help raise awareness about the pandemic, Reuters reported. Kaunda said he did not back compulsory testing, but any leader with a conscience had a duty to do "the right thing" and help slow the spread of what he called the continent's waking nightmare.

AFRICA: Some 28 million people face severe food shortages - FAO
The FAO said in a report on Thursday that an estimated 28 million people in sub-Saharan Africa were facing severe food shortages as serious food supply problems persisted in a number of countries, mainly because of prolonged drought and civil strife.

Africa: Diseases can be controlled in the world's poorest countries

JOHANNESBURG, 20 December (IRIN) - A new report issued jointly by five UN agencies and the World Bank said this week that worsening HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis (TB) and malaria epidemics were not inevitable and could be controlled.
The report entitled "Health: A Key to Prosperity" states that throughout the world, communities have mobilised to use their knowledge, skills, and resources to reverse the devastating impact of killer diseases such as AIDS, TB, malaria, and diseases that kill children, infants, and mothers.

SWAZILAND: Evicted Swazi chiefs win appeal case
Swaziland's Court of Appeal has ordered that evicted Chief Mtfuso II of KaMkhweli and all his subjects must be taken back to their home area, PANA reported on Wednesday. The Court of Appeal judges said their previous status must be maintained until the final determination of the legality or otherwise of their evictions by the High Court. The chiefs were evicted 13 October to make way for King Mswati's elder brother, Prince Maguga. The KaMkweli-Macetjeni evictions sparked a series of protests by human rights groups in the country.

ZAMBIA: Relocation of Angolan refugees
The International Organisation for Migration (IOM) has started transporting about 1,100 Angolan refugees who recently entered the North Western province of Zambia, an IOM spokesman, Thomas Weiss, said on Friday. AFRICA: HIV/AIDS figures stabilise

For the first time, there are signs that new HIV/AIDS infections may have stabilised in some parts of sub-Saharan Africa, UNAIDS said in its annual epidemic update released on Tuesday. New infections in 2000 totalled an estimated 3.8 million compared with 4 million in 1999, the 'AIDS Epidemic Update: December 2000' revealed.

ZIMBABWE: ZANU-PF wins by-election
President Robert Mugabe's ruling ZANU-PF party won a parliamentary by-election marred by violence in the town of Marondera, news reports said on Tuesday. ZANU-PF scooped 7,376 votes to the opposition Movement for Democratic Change (MDC's) 4,366 in the Marondera West rural district southwest of the capital, Harare, the state Election Commission announced.

Officials said voter turnout was just 33 percent of about 36,000 registered voters. The election was called after a ruling party lawmaker who held the seat died in a car accident in August.

ANGOLA: UNITA attack three towns
An attack by UNITA rebels early on Wednesday in south-central Angola left a number of people dead and many wounded, state radio reported on Thursday. The rebels attacked Longonjo and Tchindjenje, two towns west of the provincial capital, Huambo. Longonjo and Tchindjenje, which are 30 km apart, are major gateways to Huambo, located on the main road to the Atlantic seaport of Benguela.
