ZAMBIA: Holbrooke seeks DRC mediator
Richard Holbrooke, US ambassador to the United Nations, said on Wednesday the main aim of his current African tour is to find a "facilitator" to bring together the parties in the Congo civil war.

"The main point is that we are trying to find a facilitator," Holbrooke told reporters after meeting Zambian President Frederick Chiluba, who played a key role negotiating July's fragile peace accord. Chiluba said Organisation of African Unity (OAU)leaders will meet in Addis Ababa next week to discuss names from an undisclosed list.

ANGOLA: New currency launched
The Angolan Central Bank on Wednesday launched a new currency, the kwanza, as part of a monetary reform program to simplify small transactions, news reports said.

The reports quoted Aguinaldo Jaime, the central bank governor, as saying the authorities wanted to do away with the public having to use large wads of the old currency, the readjusted kwanza, when making small purchases. The largest denomination of the new currency will be five kwanzas, which is worth 5 million readjusted kwanzas.

ZAMBIA: British police to assist assassination probe
A team of British Scotland Yard police investigators will assist Zambian authorities in their investigation of the murder of former President Kenneth Kaunda's son, Wezi, news reports said on Monday.

A spokesman of the ministry of home affairs said the British government had agreed to help with the investigation following a request by the Kaunda family. Wezi Kaunda was shot dead outside his hom in the Zambian capital, Lusaka, on 3 November. Two suspects appeared in court to face charges and have been remanded in custody.

MALAWI: Team of observers sent to DRC
The Malawi government has sent a 10-member ceasefire observer team to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), media reports said on Thursday.

The group flew first to the Zambian capital Lusaka for a "strategic training" course which has been sponsored by the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) before being deployed in the DRC capital, Kinshasa. ZIMBABWE: Nurses go on strike
A week after striking doctors returned to work, the majority of Zimbabwe's 9,000 government nurses have gone on strike demanding higher salaries and better working conditions, AFP reported on Wednesday.

In a dispatch quoting Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZINA), it said 6,000 nurses began the action on Monday. The remaining 3,000 nurses, mostly in the capital Harare, were undecided as their hospitals struggle to make up for lost time caused by the doctors' strike, according to ZINA spokeswoman Stella Zengwa.

ANGOLA: Angolan cities cut off
Two Angolan coastal cities are virtually cut off from the rest of the country because of fighting between the UNITA rebel movement and government forces.

According to the independent 'Radio Ecclesia', UNITA rebels reportedly blew up two bridges on roads that link the cities of Benguela and Lobito. The report said that UNITA had also staged a number of ambushes along the roads. Road links from Benguela and Lobito to Lubango in the southern Huila province have also been affected.

ANGOLA: Several killed in ambushes
At least eight people were killed and several others injured in rebel ambushes and attacks at the weekend, news organisations reported on Tuesday.

The reports said UNITA rebels had left four people dead in an attack on a town called Dundo in the eastern Lunda Sul Province some 1,000 km east of the capital Luanda. Local radio correspondents quoted by AFP said hundreds had fled, but gave no further details.

ANGOLA: Government turns down UN on aid corridors
The Angolan govenement has turned down a United nations Security Council request for humanitarian aid corridors saying luanda itself could ensure emergency relief deliveries, media reports said on Wednesday.

The reports quoting Foreign minister Joao Miranda said there was no need for such measures. They also said the UNITA rebel movement had so far failed to respond to the UN request.

ANGOLA: Pope says Angolan conflict threatens entire region
Pope John Paul II has described the Angolan conflict as one of the worst humanitarian crises in Africa and warned that it threatened to engulf the entire region, media reports said on Monday.

"Ever more worrying news reaches us from Angola where, because of civil war, one of the most serious humanitarian crises is developing in silence and with no respect for human dignity," the pope said. The pope said Angolan bishops had voiced their concerns about the plight of thousands of Angolans.
