BACKGROUND

1. Africa is the continent most affected by malaria, accounting for 86% of the estimated 247 million malaria episodes and 91% of malaria deaths worldwide in 2006. Malaria also accounts for 25% to 45% of all outpatient clinic attendances and between 20% and 45% of all hospital admissions. Furthermore, it is estimated that malaria represents 17% of under-five mortality in the WHO African Region.

1. A significant increase in the numbers of persons of concern to UNHCR brought new challenges in 2006.
