2nd cash programme for highly vulnerable Mongolian herders

Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC), of the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Berne, October 07 / 2003 - The Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) of the Swiss Ministry of Foreign Affairs has approved a CHF 800'000 (USD 590'000) grant for a second Cash for Herders Programme in Mongolia. About 2'400 highly vulnerable herder families in Zavkhan aimag receive a one-fold, unconditional cash contribution to the amount of CHF 250 (USD 180). The programme aims to enable beneficiaries to cover most urgent needs during the coming winter.

1. On 18 July, heavy rainfall and hail occurred in most of regions in Mongolia, causing flash floods in the capital Ulaanbaatar and several provinces. The affected areas are Districts of Bayangol, Chingeltei, Sukhbaatar, Songinohairhan and Bayanzurh in Ulaanbaatar,

Torrential downpour claims at least 18 in Mongolia

BEIJING, July 24 (AFP) - Torrential rains and hailstorms in northern Mongolia have killed at least 18 people, Chinese state media reported Thursday.

Ten people in the capital Ulan Bator were killed and more than 100 homes were destroyed, the Xinhua news agency cited Gurragchaa, the director of the state emergencies committee, as saying.

Seven other people drowned and one was struck by lightning in various incidents in the northern part of the country.

Mongolia: Commission grants EUR 1 million in humanitarian aid

Brussels, 6 June 2003 - The European Commission has approved a €1 million humanitarian aid package to support vulnerable groups affected by harsh climatic conditions in Mongolia. The funds allocated by the Commission's Humanitarian Aid Office (ECHO), which comes under the responsibility of Commissioner Poul Nielson, will provide food aid, soup kitchens, winter clothes and seeds and tools for gardening. Aid programmes will be implemented by international agencies operating in the region. Since 2000 ECHO has contributed nearly €3 million to this crisis.

Mongolia: Dzud takes toll on children's minds

Tserensonom is a herder who lives with his wife and nine children in the soum center. He used to live in the country looking after his twenty cows, and seventy sheep and goats. However, they had to move to soum center after the dzud claimed all their livestock in the winter of 2000-2001. Since then they have had no source of income. Three daughters study in the soum school. Two boys -- 14 and 18 year-olds are away from their home, looking after a luckier herder's animals in order to help their family.

Assistance for rehabilitation of schools in Mongolia by the Trust Fund for Human Security

1. On May 27 (Tuesday), the Government of Japan and the United Nations (UN) decided to extend a total of 504,563.01-dollar assistance through the Trust Fund for Human Security to a project "Rehabilitation of Boarding Schools and Provision of Refresher Training Course for Headmasters and Teachers in the Dzud*-affected Gobi Desert Provinces in Mongolia". This project will be implemented by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Once again Mongolia has experienced another devastating winter following on from the four previous drought/dzud cycles of 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002.

Australia helps vulnerable Mongolian families
