Serbia: Full protection of personal, property rights must be provided

Belgrade, 11 Feb 2011 - Deputy Prime Minister Jovan Krkobabic spoke today with special advisor to the UNHCR High Commissioner for Refugees Anne Willem Bijleveld about open issues in the resolution of the long-lasting refugee crisis in the Western Balkans.

Krkobabic and Bijleveld agreed that there is good will of four countries - Montenegro, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia and Serbia to resolve open issues in a constructive way, and one of the manners to do so is the donors' conference scheduled to be held in June this year.

UNHCR to continue helping Balkans flood victims over the winter

SARAJEVO, Bosnia and Herzegovina, January 7 (UNHCR) - The UN refugee agency has warned that victims of the worst floods to hit Bosnia and Herzegovina and neighbouring Montenegro in decades will continue to need help during the winter months.

The flash floods in early December led to 40,000 people being evacuated from their damaged or destroyed homes, including about 10,000 who were uprooted by violence in the region in the 1990s. Many of these people needed shelter and other assistance.

Balkans: Red Cross works tirelessly in wake of severe floods

In north-western Albania, the prefecture of Shkodra faces some of the worst flooding that the Balkans has seen recently. The Shkodra branch of the Albanian Red Cross has mobilized more than 50 people to respond to an emergency that, countrywide, has seen 4,700 buildings flooded. Of these, 3,500 are still surrounded by standing water, and over 2,500 people have had to be evacuated.

A national appeal was launched to boost the capacity of the National Society to help those affected. A request for support was also made to the IFRC, which allocated 204,031 Swiss francs
