Students face up to refugee realities in Montenegro

PODGORICA, Montenegro, October 29 (UNHCR) - When a group of visual arts students in Montenegro met refugees for the first time, it left a deep imprint in their minds.

"It's distressing to witness the conditions they're living in," said one student. "I can't believe these people have no personal documents. That is so horrible," said another.

UNHCR helps Roma group find a new home in Montenegro

BERANE, Montenegro, October 16 (UNHCR) - The settlement on the banks of the Lim River in the northern Montenegrin town of Berane was barely fit for habitation, but it was the only place that a group of 27 uprooted Roma families could call home.

"Riverside" was one of many formal and informal settlements set up around Montenegro to house ethnic Serbs as well as members of the Roma, Ashkalia and Egyptian minorities who fled their homes in neighbouring Kosovo in 1999 and 2000. The difference was that it was the sole one built on private property.

Survivors and states join forces against cluster bombs

Belgrade, 4 October 2007 - Cluster bomb survivors gathered in Serbia this week to ensure their rights were at the heart of international efforts to ban the weapon by 2008.

Twenty-two of the 26 affected states participated in the Belgrade Conference of States Affected by Cluster Munitions, the latest development in the Oslo Process for a new treaty banning these weapons, which has gathered the support of 82 countries in just seven months.

Swedish election monitors to Kosovo

The Government decided today to send a maximum of two long-term observers and no more than fifteen short-term observers to the Council of Europe observation mission to supervise the planned parliamentary election in Kosovo on 17 November. The election will be organised by Kosovo's election authority together with the Organisation for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE).

Sida is responsible for the recruitment and training of Swedish election observers.
