  1. On September 18 (Wed), the Government of Japan decided to extend emergency assistance in kind (equivalent to approximately 10 million yen) comprising 20 tents, 2,640 blankets, 10 electric power generators, 300 shovels and 300 flashlights to the Union of Myanmar, which has sustained damage from flood.

    2. In Monywa, a commercial city located in the midland of Myanmar, the Chindwin River, which flows through the city, swelled, and as a result, its water level exceeded the dangerous level defined by the Government of Myanmar for the first time since about 40 years.

While not formally requesting the Federation to launch an international appeal, the Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS) has indicated that offers of external assistance - to maintain the ongoing response from staff and volunteers to the deteriorating floods situation - would be most welcome.

The Swiss government has granted a SFr. 50 million credit to be used by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation, SDC, in a broad-based action programme aimed at assisting flood-stricken regions in Europe and Asia.

The recent floods have cost many lives and devastated infrastructure and housing in Europe and Asia. In response, on 22 August the Swiss government approved a supplementary credit of SFr. 50 million on behalf of the flood victims.

Concern is growing as the threat of major floods in the Mekong Delta increases. In south Vietnam, water levels are rising rapidly - between 5-10 cms a day and reaching emergency levels in some areas.

National authorities are in the process of evacuating thousands of people from the area, and have mobilised thousands of soldiers to help with the mitigation measures and relief preparations.
