ABIDJAN, 28 January (IRIN) - The
UN World Food Programme (WFP) on Tuesday launched an appeal for US $28
million to provide emergency relief food to feed thousands of people threatened
by starvation in five Western Sahel countries.
WFP said food rations urgently needed
to be purchased, to help feed 420,000 people suffering from three consecutive
years of severe drought in southern Mauritania and 160,000 people in Cape
Verde, The Gambia, Mali and Senegal.
