Mali: Cholera outbreak spreads death toll rises to 106

ABIDJAN, 18 December (IRIN) - The death toll from a cholera outbreak that has swept through the Niger river valley in Mali since early November has reached 106, the World Health Organization (WHO) said on Wednesday.
WHO quoted officials of Mali's Ministry of Health as saying that 1,216 cases of cholera and 106 deaths had been reported by 12 December, giving a fatality rate of 8.72 percent.

Most of the cases were recorded in and around the towns of Bamako, Koulikoro, Segou, Mopti and Timbuktu near the Niger River. But WHO said in its latest update on the cholera outbreak

Disease outbreak reported: Cholera in Mali - update 2

As of 12 December 2003, the Ministry of Health, Mali has reported a total number of 1216 cases, including 106 deaths (case fatality rate, 8.72%) in Koulikoro, Segou, Mopti, Tombouctou, Sikasso regions and in Bamako. (see previous report ).
The outbreak appears to be in decline in Koulikoro and Segou regions but is still not under control in Mopti region. In addition, cholera cases have recently been registered in Sikasso region.

    Disease outbreak reported: Cholera in Mali - update

    As of 2 December 2003, the Ministry of Health, Mali has reported a total number of 1 149 cases, including 78 deaths in the Koulikoro, Segou and Mopti regions (see previous report) .
    Médecins sans Frontières and Médecins du Monde are providing technical assistance and supplies. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the WHO Global Task Force on Cholera Control is sending an intervention team and cholera kits.
