Climate change risks overwhelming current global humanitarian capacity

(Poznan, 3 December 2008): Today, for the first time in climate change negotiations, the humanitarian agencies of the Inter-Agency Standing Committee have teamed up with disaster risk reduction staff of the International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (ISDR) system to issue a joint call for scaled-up global action to reduce disaster risk and to strengthen preparedness for effective response.

The current negotiations on risk management and risk reduction in Poznan are a unique opportunity to make sure that adaptation action is able to prevent global humanitarian catastrophe.

Central Europe and Southern Caucasus Regional Programmes: Plan 2009 - 2010 (MAA66001)

Report
IFRC
Executive summary

The regions of central Europe and southern Caucasus have experienced socio-economic turbulence, with sections of their populations suffering serious health threats that contribute to higher levels of vulnerability. Continuing economic, social and health sector reforms are characteristic of the ongoing state-led processes in most of the countries. These reforms have had an impact on the most vulnerable groups in society, whose access to health and care networks is diminishing following privatisation and cost-cutting measures. Many people have experienced

Greater stability in the Balkans is lowering crime, reports UNODC

The Balkan area is, surprisingly, one of the safest in Europe. The report Crime and its Impact on the Balkans by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) belies enduring stereotypes of the region as a hotbed of organized crime and violence. People are as safe, or safer, on the streets and in their homes as they are in most parts of the world.

Released today, the study concludes that the Balkans have become a low-crime region after the decade-long turmoil

Crime and its impact on the Balkans and affected countries

Executive summary

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) is mandated to analyse drugs and crime situations around the world. The present report is a contribution to that objective, looking at a region stigmatised for its role in heroin trafficking, human trafficking, and other forms of organised crime. It is based on data gathered though Member States' responses to the United Nations Survey of Crime Trends and Operations of Criminal Justice Systems (CTS) and the United Nations Annual Reports Questionnaire (ARQ), as well as a desk review of the published

One Macedonian town's waste is refugees' livelihood

SKOPJE, the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (UNHCR) - Nine years ago Stenkovec was home for a few months to more than 350,000 refugees from Kosovo; today it is a giant garbage dump.

But one man's waste is another's treasure and, for Zoran Dimov, this blot on the landscape is a business opportunity. The young Roma-Macedonian entrepreneur runs a recycling plant near the fly-blown piles of rubbish and his venture is supporting the UNHCR's self-reliance strategy by hiring Roma refugees.

Annual report 2008

Brussels - What continues to make the International Crisis Group unique among organisations active in conflict prevention and resolution is our highly distinctive methodology: a combination of field-based research, sharply practical policy recommendations, and high-level advocacy. In January 2008 we were named by the Foreign Policy Research Institute, after an international peer survey, as one of the "Top Ten Think Tanks in the World". But we think of ourselves not just as a think tank, but a do tank.

FYRoM: Roma refugees see music as their route to self-reliance

SKOPJE, the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, January 15 (UNHCR) - Membership in The Roma Talents, the one and only refugee band in Suto Orizari, may not make Roki and his friends famous. But they have seized a chance for self-reliance that relatively few Roma refugees have managed.

When I visited them in one of their rented homes in Suto Orizari municipality in Skopje, the capital of Macedonia, I recalled the first time I had seen Roki. In 1999 he had arrived in the country as a 12-year-old boy holding his parents' hands and trying to understand the events around him.
