Hurricane Ivan: CWS/ERP Situation Report 14 Sep 2004

SITUATION: While focus on Hurricane Ivan now turns to its possible effects on the United States or Mexico, a number of Caribbean islands find themselves trying to recover from the storm's severe effects.

In the last week, the slow-moving storm -- today, a category-4 storm -- has hit the islands of Grenada, Jamaica, the Cayman Islands and Cuba and also has brushed other countries, including the Dominican Republic and Venezuela.

The latest death toll, according to the BBC: at least 34 in Grenada; five in Venezuela; 20 in Jamaica; four in the Dominican Republic; and one in Tobago.

1. The National Weather Center in Miami reports that at 1500 GMT today, the centre of Hurricane Ivan was located near latitude 20.6 North, longitude 84.4 West or about 85 miles (135 km) south-southwest of the western tip of Cuba.

2. A Hurricane Warning remains in effect for Cuba from Pinar del Rio to Ciego de Avila, including the Isle of Youth.

Ivan Eyes Cuba, Mexico After Slamming Caymans

GEORGE TOWN, Cayman Islands (Reuters) - Hurricane Ivan, one of the fiercest Atlantic storms recorded, headed toward Cuba Monday after pummeling the Cayman Islands, Jamaica and Grenada on a track that eventually will bring it to the U.S. coast.

A monster storm with sustained winds near 160 mph that has killed at least 47 people, Ivan sent sea water surging over the low-lying Caymans, a British territory and wealthy offshore finance center of 45,000 people.

ChevronTexaco evacuates workers in Gulf of Mexico ahead of hurricane

WASHINGTON, Sept 13 (AFP) - ChevronTexaco said Monday it was evacuating workers from some oil platforms in the Gulf of Mexico in anticipation of Hurricane Ivan's passage.

"We have evacuated 667 nonessential personnel so far, and we are continuing through the evacuation process as we speak," said company spokesman Matt Carmichael.

The spokesman said the oil giant was evacuating people from the eastern and central Gulf of Mexico facilities, "but we are watching the track of the hurricane.

Cuba, Mexico brace for Hurricane Ivan, US warily eyes the storm

HAVANA, Sept 13 (AFP) - Cuba Monday braced for Ivan, a ferocious hurricane that killed at least 63 people across the Caribbean, left a trail of destruction, and threatened Mexico's Yucatan peninsula and several US states.
