Red Cross assists in Mexico flood relief operations

Battered by a series of tropical storms and saturated with the heaviest rainfall in years, Mexico was deluged by floodwaters in September and is still struggling to clean up after months of wicked weather.
With eight states in Mexico severely affected by flooding, and storm damage stretching along each of Mexico's coastlines, relief efforts by the Mexican Red Cross have been in full swing since the first storms struck in August.

CRS to help Mexicans hit by weeks of hurricanes, tropical storms

October 8, 2003, Baltimore, MD - Tropical storms and hurricanes continue to batter Mexico from both coasts, with the latest rains and flooding affecting more than 500,000 people in 12 states across the country. Catholic Relief Services (CRS) earlier committed resources to relief efforts in the wake of Hurricanes Marty and Ignacio and is now working with Caritas Mexico to respond to this latest round of natural disasters.

1. The National Weather Service in Miami reports that at 12:00 GMT today, the centre of Tropical Storm Olaf was located inland near latitude 19.6 North, longitude 104.6 West or about 30 miles/ 50 km North of Manzanillo Mexico. Maximum sustained winds were 50 mph / 80 km/h with higher gusts.

Heavy flooding affects thousands in Mexico

Mexico City (dpa) - Heavy rains in the past several days in Mexico have forced thousands out of their homes in the southeastern part of the country because of floods and landslides, officials said Tuesday.

An alert was still in effect as Mexico braced for further onslaughts from several storm systems in what has been a particularly intense rainy season compounded by a hurricane season with numerous storms.

1. The National Weather Service in Miami reports that at 12:00 GMT today, the centre of Hurricane Olaf was located near latitude 18.9 North, longitude 106.1 West or about 110 miles/175 km South-Southwest of Cabo Corrientes. Maximum sustained winds were near 75 mph / 120 km/h with higher gusts.

2. At 12:00 GMT, a Hurricane Warning remained in effect for the pacific coast of Mexico from Punta San Telmo

Hurricanes peter out near Mexican coast

PUERTO VALLARTA, Mexico, Oct 6 (Reuters) - Two hurricanes that threatened to hit the same area of northwestern Mexico blew themselves out on Monday and oil export ports in the east of the country reopened after another storm there.

The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said hurricanes Olaf and Nora in the Pacific were downgraded to tropical storms as their wind speed dropped.

Despite the storm downgrade, emergency services evacuated dozens of people from poor neighborhoods on hillsides overlooking the resort of Puerto Vallarta.

Mexico on high alert for triple whammy: "Larry," "Olaf," "Nora"

MEXICO CITY, Oct 5 (AFP) - Mexico declared a state of emergency in much of its East Coast south to the Guatemalan border as Tropical Storm "Larry" lashed the Gulf Coast and two others threatened the Pacific side Sunday.

The tropical storm warning was in effect along Mexico's Gulf Coast from Veracruz to Ciudad del Carmen, the National Meteorological Service spokesman Juan Jose Pastrana said.

"Larry" has dumped heavy rains for days and made landfall in the state of Tabasco, Pastrana said.

Gulf of Mexico braces for heavy rain as Tropical Storm Larry blows nearby

MIAMI, Oct 3 (AFP) - Tropical Storm Larry churned in the Gulf of Mexico Friday, holding nearly stationary as it brought heavy clouds and warnings of major rainfall for Mexico's coastal states, the US National Weather Service said.

"Larry has been meandering during the past several hours, and little motion is expected today," the Miami-based National Weather Service said on its website.

Larry was packing maximum sustained winds of 95 kilometers (60 miles) per hour at 1200 GMT, with higher gusts.

The storm was located some 250 kilometers
