Hurricane relief project planned for southern Mexico

CAMPECHE, Mexico - Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) is committing $44,500 Cdn./$30,000 U.S. to assist people in southern Mexico communities damaged in October by Hurricane Isadore. Funds will be split equally between the eight low German-speaking Mennonite colonies in Campeche state and the surrounding indigenous communities.

Hurricane Isidore response updated 05 Nov 2002

A grant from FHI's Rapid Response Fund helped Christians in Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula assist their neighbours in the wake of Hurricane Isidore.
Yucatan Presbyterian Ministries (YPM) used FHI's grant to purchase food for 400 people in the villages of Sinaché and Telchac. Youth from Bethesda Presbyterian Church of Canc=FAn packed the food items and assisted in the deliveries. Food packages included cooking oil, rice, canned tuna, beans, corn flour, powdered milk, lentils and salt.

Hurricane Kenna, a powerful Category 4 hurricane with 145 mph winds, roared into San Blas, Mexico, a small tourist and fishing town 80 miles north of popular tourist spot Puerto Vallarta. The once quaint, coastal village is now a wasteland of splintered wood, twisted metal and crumbled buildings. Back hoes and dump trucks clear the streets of debris as well as mountains of sand washed in from the sea. Despite the widespread damage, there was only one reported death of a woman killed by a falling wall.

MEXICO CITY, Oct 26, 2002 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Powerful Hurricane Kenna left three people dead and scores of others injured as it toppled trees and power lines in Mexico's Pacific coast, the authorities confirmed on Saturday.

Hurricane Kenna, which slammed into Mexico's Pacific coast on Friday, killed two women in Nayarit state and another one in Jalisco States.

In Jalisco's Puerto Vallarta, a tourist resort, at least 52 people were injured as the hurricane hurled objects through the air, leaving debris strewn in streets.

Hurricane Kenna hits Mexico

Hurricane Kenna has hit Mexico's Pacific coast and Mexican Red Cross volunteers and staff are on hand, prepared to help those affected if needed.
A hurricane warning is in effect for the south-west coast of Mexico from Mazatlan to La Fortuna, including the Islas Marias, and a tropical storm warning has been issued south of La Fortuna to Manzanillo.

The Mexican Red Cross is mobilising its branches and volunteers, as well as relief goods. The Mexican Red Cross headquarters has made available 75 tonnes of relief supplies including water, food, clothing and medicines to the Jalisco branch.
