La Fédération internationale des Sociétés de la Croix-Rouge et du Croissant-Rouge (FICR) lance aujourd'hui un appel préliminaire de 5 millions de francs suisses (USD 4,4 millions / EUR 3,3 millions) pour tenter de freiner la propagation du virus H1N1 et se préparer à une probable pandémie mondiale de grippe. Between October 28 and November 5, 2007 torrential rains, more than 1,200 millimeters of water in a three-day period, poured down on Tabasco and Chiapas, Mexico. A high tide in the Gulf of Mexico prevented the rising waters of the principal rivers from emptying into the sea. 25,900 square kilometers, 80% of the plain of the state of Tabasco, were inundated, including 700 towns and most of the capital city, Villahermosa.

Following several days of torrential rains, including from the passage of Tropical Storm Noel (since upgraded to a hurricane), several countries in Central America and the Caribbean are facing severe floods, which have submerged entire villages and left thousands homeless and destitute. In some cases, such as in Mexico, these floods are the worst in decades. In other countries, such as in Haiti and Nicaragua, they are only the latest in a series of devastating floods to hit the region over the past few weeks.
