UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, welcomes the decision by the Kingdom of Morocco to admit a group of Syrian refugees stranded in difficult circumstances at the country’s border with Algeria since 17 April.

The remaining 28 refugees from an original group of 41, including women and children, were collected on 20 June by the Moroccan police from the border and transported by bus to Bouarfa, from where they were transferred to the capital Rabat. UNHCR is working with the authorities of Morocco and other countries to find a durable solution to the plight of these vulnerable refugees.

Description of the disaster

From mid-January, a cold wave has moved across Morocco affecting most cities. Temperatures have fallen rapidly, reach as low as -13 degrees Celsius in high altitude areas, and between -2 and 0 degrees Celsius in the interior of the country. Regions in the east, north and south have been particularly affected. These low temperatures were due to a mass flow of polar air from the Arctic to Eastern Europe and North Africa. The national services of meteorology directorate have confirmed that intense cold conditions are set to continue.

In late February, a cold wave swept across Morocco, bringing strong winds and freezing temperatures to several regions of the country. The Middle Atlas, north of the High Atlas, the Rif and the eastern highlands saw heavy snowfall, while the neighbouring plains faced severe thunderstorms. More than 750,000 people were affected by the unseasonable weather conditions, with many left in urgent need for food, warm clothes and shoes, blankets, medicines, heaters and other winterization items.

A cold wave has affected Morocco on Saturday 27 February, 2016, caused by a polar air mass flow passing from the North Pole to Europe and North Africa, and has generated westerly winds that has brought extreme and exceptionally low temperatures as per the Communications Department at the National Directorate of Meteorology.
