Looking Beyond Food Support: Building skills with World Food Programme food-assisted productive safety net programmes

Empowering HIV-positive women

In 2002, Françoise from Goma, in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, was admitted to the UN World Food Programme’s (WFP) HIV and AIDS programme. “Food assistance has been my only reliable source of food, especially when I was sick and hospitalized,” recalls Françoise, who lost her husband to AIDS.

In addition to food, HIV-positive people can also receive training and non-food assistance from WFP’s partner organizations to allow them to learn valuable life skills, such as how to start a business, to help them become self-sufficient.

ECHO allocates €15 million to address humanitarian needs in Southern Africa

21/12/2012 - The European Commission is allocating €15 million from the 10th European Development Fund (EDF) to help the most vulnerable people affected by persistent drought in the Southern African countries of Angola, Lesotho, Malawi and Zimbabwe. The new funding brings the Commission's humanitarian aid in the region to €33 million for this year.

SADC, KfW and DBSA sign Agreement on a Regional Fund for Water and Basic Sanitation

The Southern African Development Community (SADC) and KfW Development Bank on behalf of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) have agreed on establishing a Regional Fund for Water and Basic Sanitation. The Fund will be financed with an initial grant contribution of EUR 10 million by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany through KfW. The Fund will be managed by the Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA).

Donations to the Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho

The Government of the Republic of Botswana today donated various food items such as beans, sorghum, beef, milk to the Government of the Kingdom of Lesotho in response to an international flash appeal on the drought situation in that country. The donation was received by the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lesotho Hon. Tim Thahane, accompanied by the Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Hon. Mophato Monyake.

Southern African Agriculture and Climate Change: Lesotho

This summary note is an excerpt from the chapter on Lesotho that will appear in the peer-reviewed IFPRI monograph, Southern African Agriculture and Climate Change: A Comprehensive Analysis.

The research, produced in collaboration with scientists from the countries studied, is based on scenarios from economic global climate change models, and takes into account estimates of each country’s economic and population growth. Each study includes a set of policy recommendations.

Climate Prediction Center’s Africa Hazards Outlook For USAID / FEWS-NET December 6 – December 12, 2012

1) Moisture deficits remain following a mid-season dry spell that occurred in early November and recent drier than average conditions. With a shortened recovery period in the next several weeks, this could result in a deterioration of pastoral and agro-pastoral conditions, and possible crop yield reductions by the end of season throughout parts of Ethiopia, Somalia, Kenya and eastern Tanzania.

Lesotho: In a food crisis, a grandfather struggles to feed his family

Mr Tsitso Mohalake is 62 years old and lives in a remote farming village in north-eastern Lesotho. He and his wife care for their two children (one who is in school and one who is looking for work) as well as their three grandchildren whose young parents passed away following long illnesses. Due to poor rainfall last season, Mr Mohalake only managed to harvest enough to feed the family for a month and a half. Of his original five cattle, four have been stolen and the fifth has died.

  • Malawi launched Response Plans to address increasing food insecurity.

  • The Response Plan is requesting $102 million of which $41 million have been sourced, leaving a shortfall of $61 million.

  • The number of people with missing food entitlements stands at 1.97 million, an increase of 21% from the June MVAC Report.

  • This situation is compounded by the devaluation of the kwacha and the increasing price of fuel and maize.
