Climate Change Impacts on Food Security in Sub-Saharan Africa

Climate change impacts vary significantly, depending on the scenario and the Global Circulation Model (GCM) chosen. This is particularly true for Sub-Saharan Africa. This paper uses a comprehensive climate change scenario (CCC) based on ensembles of 17 GCMs selected based on their relative performance regarding past predictions of temperature and precipitation at the level of 2o x 2o grid cells, generated by a recently developed entropy-based downscaling model. Based on past performance, the effects of temperature and precipitation across the 17 GCMs are incorporated

Climate change represents the medium and long-term changes in average weather patterns. It is the result of both external forces and human activity. The major external forces that influence climate change include such processes as variations in solar radiation, deviations in the earth's orbit, and variations in the level of Green House Gas (GHG) concentrations, which lead to changes in the global mean temperature and the amount of precipitation. In contrast human activities including use of fossil fuels, land use changes and waste management are

Southern Africa Food Security Outlook October 2010 through March 2011

With the lean season approaching, regional food security conditions remain mixed with stable conditions prevailing over most parts of the region where harvests were good, but fragile in localized food insecure areas. Of major concern are the poor households who cannot access adequate food despite most local markets being adequately stocked with staple foods. Due to own production failures, these households have turned to market purchases much earlier than normal, have already stretched their coping capacities, and will be requiring external assistance.

Following the launch of the new five year program in 2009, a call for proposals was developed and a merit review competition was held in early 2010. Seven research proposals were selected for funding and will receive grants of up to CAD $1.8 million over four years.
