Lesotho: Holiday gifts pave the way to self-sufficiency

Report
IRIN
URUPU, 24 December 2007 (IRIN) - When Mamanuel Rampai heard she would receive a free pig for Christmas a few years ago, purchased by an anonymous donor in the US through an aid group's online gift catalogue, she all but dismissed the present.

But the gift, a seven-month-old sow named Pinki, has since made her a role model for other pig farmers in her rural community. "I've learned so much about how to care for them, because they've become a livelihood," Rampai, 43, told IRIN.

Rampai lives in Turupu, one of Lesotho's

Buying food from developing countries: An interview with Nicole Menage, chief of WFP's food procurement service

Rome, 12 December 2007 - Nicole Menage, chief of WFP's food procurement service, talks to web writer Michelle Hough about a little-known fact: WFP bought over three-quarters of its food in 2006 in developing countries.

"The answer to our problems lies here in our fields," said a priest quoted in a recent WFP story about the tiny southern African nation of Lesotho.

It's tempting to think that he had faith indeed if he thought that a nation ravaged by its worst drought in thirty years could find anything in its fields, let alone the answer to its problems.

FAO/GIEWS Global Watch: High cereal prices are hurting vulnerable populations in developing countries

Prevailing high international cereal prices, coupled with soaring freight rates and record world fuel prices, have resulted in substantial rises in retail prices of cereal based food staples, such as bread, pasta and tortillas, as well as milk and meat, in countries across the world, generating inflationary pressure on domestic food markets and fuelling social unrest. In the past months, food riots have broken out in such countries as Mexico, Morocco, Uzbekistan, Yemen, Guinea, Mauritania and Senegal.

Lesotho farmers find key to a brighter future with WFP

Tebellong, 10 December 2007 - Despite the worst drought in 30 years, farmers in Lesotho have produced enough food to feed themselves and their families, and sell what's left over to WFP. Richard Lee visited a group of farmers who are looking forward to a brighter future thanks to the World Food Programme purchasing their food.

For the first time in her life, 52-year-old Maleetoane Khali has money. Not a lot but enough to send her older children to school and to buy previously unaffordable necessities like soap and salt.

More importantly, the money has made

Global: Climate change - heating up conflict

Report
IRIN
BALI, 10 December 2007 (IRIN) - Increasing pressure caused by climate change on essential resources like water could not only trigger domestic conflicts but also have a destabilising effect globally, warn UN officials.

"It is not far-fetched to begin to see growing tensions; not far fetched to think climate change will globally have a destabilising effect," said Achim Steiner, Executive Secretary of the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), who drew a scenario in which countries heavily affected by climate change would blame those not seen as doing enough to cut emissions.

Lesotho: Grassroots solutions flourish in hard times

Report
IRIN
MASERU, 4 December 2007 (IRIN) - The worst drought in 30 years, combined with one of the world's highest HIV rates, has left the mountain kingdom of Lesotho struggling to cope, but there are glimmers of hope as the government and aid agencies come up with innovative responses to the humanitarian crisis.

2007 began with normal rainfall, but then the rain stopped and drought set in. Severe food shortages followed, making it much harder for HIV-positive people on antiretroviral (ARV) drugs to obtain the proper nutrition that is vital to the success of their medication.

Report
IRIN
JOHANNESBURG, 29 November 2007 (IRIN) - A voucher system to access agricultural inputs could put farmers in drought-hit Swaziland and Lesotho on the road to recovery, according to a senior UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) official.

The vouchers - with cash values between US$15 and US$75, depending on the country - allowed farmers to purchase inputs at mobile trade fairs organised by the FAO. Previously, the FAO and other relief agencies provided a pre-selected combination of seeds and tools.

"But this did not meet the precise
