Southern African Humanitarian Crisis update Dec 2006

REGIONAL OVERVIEW

Overall, the 2006/07 agricultural season has started relatively well thanks to favourable rainfall in most of the southern African region. However, late or insufficient rainfall and poor distribution may affect yields and area planted, potentially affecting final harvest prospects in southern and central Mozambique, southern Zambia, parts of southern Zimbabwe, among others. The persistence of moderate El Nino conditions in the Pacific Ocean is a source of concern for the second half of the rainy season, from January through March. Although there is

Field Exchange Dec 2006: No. 29

From the Editor

There are two major themes running through this issue of Field Exchange. The first is a focus on Southern Africa and the programmatic challenges presented by HIV/AIDS and the second concerns infant and young child feeding in emergencies (IFE). An extended visit to South Africa over the summer by ENN co-director, Marie McGrath, offered the opportunity to visit several collaborative WFP programmes in Swaziland and Namibia and also to identify significant HIV-related research in the region. Setting the scene in Southern Africa, George Aelion of WFP describes

FEWS Southern Africa Food Security Update Nov 2006 - Food supplies tighten as hunger season begins

Summary and implications

The food security status of many households across the region remains stable, although there are signs that household food supplies are now tightening as the hunger season sets in. Food prices have generally remained stable and below last year and the past five years' average, but prices noticeably increased in November in select markets, indicating decreasing market supplies and raising concerns about growing food access problems among vulnerable populations. This is particularly true in Zimbabwe, where markets are generally inadequately

Climate change threatens agricultural crisis - UN

By Gordon Bell

CAPE TOWN, Nov 9 (Reuters) - Immediate steps are needed to avert a potential catastrophe as climate change dries up water resources in drought affected areas, hitting poor farmers, a United Nations report said on Thursday.

The vast majority of the world's malnourished people, estimated at about 830 million people, are small farmers, herders and farm labourers, pointing to devastating effects from global warning and requiring a tripling of yearly farming aid to poor countries.

Southern Africa: Climate change threatens regional food security

Report
IRIN
[This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]

JOHANNESBURG, 7 Nov 2006 (IRIN) - Climate change could force drought-prone areas of southern Africa to abandon agriculture permanently in the next 50 years, according to new research.

As a result of global warming, "weather events will become less predictable and more intense - heavier rainfall and longer and more frequent drought cycles", said Martin Krause, the regional technical advisor on climate change with the United Nations

Southern African Humanitarian Crisis update Sept/Oct 2006

HIGHLIGHTS

Zimbabwe: WFP estimates that 1.4 million people are in critical need of food assistance, based on the preliminary findings of the VAC. This number is expected to rise to 1.9 million people due to rising inflation and an increased lack of access to the market. WFP continues to scale down its operation, so far affecting roughly half of the 900,000 people it was originally targeting, due to funding shortages.

Funding shortage edges millions of southern Africans into food crisis

JOHANNESBURG - The United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) today warned that a massive funding shortfall is forcing food aid cuts to as many as 4.3 million people across southern Africa who remain chronically vulnerable despite this year's reportedly good harvests across the region.

The US$60 million funding shortfall comes just as the annual "lean season" approaches, when people have to wait until next March or April for the harvest. Due to a lack of donor support, since September WFP offices across the region have begun

How to provide care and treatment to the estimated one in four adults living with HIV in Lesotho, in the context of a severe health-worker shortage, demands creative solutions.
