Southern Africa: Rising child deaths illustrate region's health crisis

Report
IRIN
JOHANNESBURG, 29 December (IRIN) - When Dr Keith Bolton treated children in the 1990s, the death of a patient was still relatively infrequent. As head of child health at South Africa's Coronation Hospital in Johannesburg, Bolton saw an average of one child die each week.

Now, Bolton and his colleagues see one child die every day.

"In the past, death was an uncommon event in children, especially after the newborn period," said Bolton. "Now we've seen a complete reversal of the gains we made in the 1960s, '70s and '80s."

In the early 1960s, nearly one in five

[This report does not necessarily reflect the views of the United Nations]

MASERU, 16 December (PLUSNEWS) - The office of the Lesotho's HIV/AIDS Directorate, on the 6th floor of an office building in downtown Maseru, the capital, has almost none of the amenities of a modern bureaucracy.

A note on food security and land tenure security in Lesotho

Stephen Turner and Martin Adams*

Some definitions

Food security refers to 'access by all people at all times to sufficient food for an active and healthy life'.1

Land tenure security refers to secure access by, and land rights for, people who wish to use and occupy land for diverse purposes.

Note that, while everyone needs food security, not everyone wishes to use and occupy land for food production. However, the great majority of people need secure access to land for accommodation (housing, business, etc.), even if it is held only in terms of a short term lease.
