With above normal rains forecast for much of the SADC region, this issue of the Regional Flood Watch reports the onset of the rains, the likelihood of floods this season and the current state of flood preparedness in the region. JOHANNESBURG, 12 December (IRIN) - Recent heavy rains over large parts of South Africa are unlikely to affect maize exports to the rest of the region, an economist with Grain-SA told IRIN on Wednesday.

"The heavy rains that we have been experiencing in recent weeks is likely to affect the new crop and not the old crop. Our [South Africa's] maize exports would come from the old crop," the economist said.

Southern Africa: IFRC appeals for US $13 million

JOHANNESBURG, 5 December (IRIN) - The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) is appealing for more than US $13 million to fund its humanitarian programmes in southern Africa.

ZIMBABWE: Commonwealth visit could lead to further isolation

A significant development in Zimbabwe this week was the arrival on Wednesday (24 October) of a Commonwealth mission charged with monitoring September's Abuja agreement. The visit came as farming organisations and civic groups said that state-backed invasions of white-owned farms had escalated despite the deal the government signed in Nigeria pledging to end the land crisis.

ZIMBABWE: Government declares new minimum wage
President Robert Mugabe's Cabinet has legislated minimum wages for Zimbabwean industry without reaching agreement with labour and business, the 'Financial Gazette' reported on Thursday. The minimum wages, which were still under discussion in the Tripartite negotiating Forum (TNF), were gazetted together with new price controls at the end of last week and were effective from 1 October.

SOUTH AFRICA: Expulsion of Zimbabwean workers temporarily halted
A South African court on Monday ordered the government to temporarily halt the expulsion of Zimbabwean workers from farms in the country's Northern Province which borders Zimbabwe. A spokesman for the Agricultural Union of South Africa (Agri-SA) told IRIN on Tuesday that three farmers' associations won a court interdict against the expulsion of an estimated 5,500 workers. ANGOLA: UNITA attacks power station near Luanda

Suspected UNITA rebels attacked a power station on the outskirts of the Angolan capital, Luanda, early on Tuesday - bringing the rebel movement's current wave of attacks closer to the capital than ever before.

An explosion took place at the substation in the Viana municipality, about 20 km from the centre of Luanda. A gun battle ensued between the attackers and soldiers of the Angolan Armed Forces

COMORES: Anjouan doctors strike over "deplorable" conditions
Public hospital doctors on the separatist island of Anjouan went on strike to protest against "deplorable conditions" of life and work, a strike organiser said on Friday. An AFP report quoted Dr Ahmed Abdallah as saying that the work stoppage which began on Thursday was expected to last until Sunday. However, he warned that if doctors' demands were not met by then, an open-ended strike would begin next Wednesday, the report said.

MOZAMBIQUE: WFP update
Preliminary results from a government crop and food assessment at the end of August indicated there would be "several pockets" of food insecurity in the country which would need some kind of relief intervention by the end of the year, WFP said in its latest emergency report.

Southern Africa: Region to meet cereal needs

JOHANNESBURG, 6 September (IRIN) - Southern Africa's cereal consumption requirements would be "more than met" this marketing season, according to the latest report by USAID's Famine Early Warning System Network (FEWS-Net).
