ZAMBIA: Number of refugees reaching crisis proportions
Zambian President Frederick Chiluba has called for a new approach to the problem of the increasing numbers of refugees in his country. Chiluba said he was worried about the escalating refugee crisis in Zambia and called for the re-enforcement of UN peacekeeping operations to achieve peace and stability in conflict-ridden African countries.

ZIMBABWE-SOUTH AFRICA: Eskom threatens to cut power
South Africa's power company Eskom has warned that it may be forced to cut supplies to Zimbabwe because of mounting debts, news reports said.

"Obviously it's a worry for us and we're taking steps through the correct process to address it," a senior Eskom manager Peter O'Connor told journalists on Tuesday. "We have informed them that if we are stretched with our local customers who are good payers, they will be the first to be cut."

ZIMBABWE: War veterans vow to stay on farms
Chenjerai Hunzvi, leader of the war veterans occupying white-owned farms in Zimbabwe, has said his followers would remain on lands they have seized as pressure mounted on President Robert Mugabe to stop the action and placate international donors, the weekly 'Financial Gazette' reported on Thursday.

ZAMBIA-DRC: Chiluba and Kabila to meet in Windhoek
Talks between Zambian President Frederick Chiluba and Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) President Laurent-Desire Kabila have been moved to the Namibian capital Windhoek, news reports said on Wednesday. The talks were originally scheduled to take place in the southern DRC town of Lubumbashi.

LESOTHO: Provisional election date
Lesotho's Independent Electoral Commission (IEC) on Wednesday set 26 May, 2001 as the provisional date for the country's general elections, the SAPA news agency reported.

IEC commissioner Mafole Sematlane said voter registration would begin in October and would last three months. Preprations for the recruitment and training of registration staff and the procurement and distribution of registration material was expected to start shortly and would be completed by the end of August.

ANGOLA: World Bank approves credit
The World Bank has approved a US $33 million credit to Angola to help the government increase sustainable use of basic social and economic services, the bank said in a statement.

NAMIBIA: Soldiers in DRC may be freed
Namibian soldiers who have been held as prisoners of war (POWs) in Kigali, Rwanda, may be freed this week, a report in the 'The Namibian' said.

A spokesman for the southern Africa Regional Delegation of the International Confederation of the Red Cross (ICRC) in Harare told IRIN on Wednesday that the release was part of a recent agreement on POWs reached between all sides in the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). "It is not only related to the Namibians, but all soldiers," he said.

SOUTH AFRICA: IOM Representative Shun Chetty dies
Shun Chetty, the Southern African regional representative of the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), died in Pretoria on Monday, the IOM said in a statement.

Chetty, who was born in Durban, South Africa, in 1941, was admitted as an attorney in 1971 and practised in Durban and Johannesburg. He left South Africa in the late 1970s for political reasons.

SOUTH AFRICA: Goldmine blast kills seven
Seven miners were killed in an explosion overnight at a gold mine near Welkom, about 300 km southwest of the capital Pretoria, mine owners Gold Fields said on Monday. Gold Fields spokesman Wilson Zwane said the dead men were from neighbouring Lesotho and Mozambique.

"More miners might be missing," Zwane said. According to news reports about 1,105 miners were underground when the blast occurred at 3:00 a.m. (0500 GMT) 780 metres below the surface.

LESOTHO: Security stepped up ahead of strike
Joint army and police patrols were ordered onto the streets of Lesotho on Tuesday on the eve of a nationwide strike called by the opposition.

The operation is to "make sure that people who love law and order are safe," a police superintendent was reported by Reuters as saying.
