NAMIBIA: More Angolan refugees flee fighting

Refugees fleeing fighting between Angolan government forces and UNITA rebels have been crossing south into Namibia daily this week as tensions along the 700 km of common frontier increased.

ZIMBABWE/DRC: Military contingency plans

ZIMBABWE: Nurses strike ends
A nurses strike has ended in Zimbabwe with the government agreeing to double the salaries of all health care workers, sources told IRIN on Tuesday.

More than half of the country's registered public health nurses went on strike last week after a deadlock in talks between the Zimbabwe Nurses Association (ZINA) and the government over the nurses' grading system according to which salaries are set. According to media reports a junior nurse earns about US $1,400 a year.

ANGOLA: Peace activists meet
Peace activists are meeting in the Angolan capital Luanda this week to launch a campaign for an immediate ceasefire and the opening of humanitarian corridors to deliver humanitarian aid to various parts of the country.

According to news reports the group includes church people, trade unionists, human rights activists, journalists, and academics. ANGOLA: UNITA resumes shelling of cities

The UNITA rebel movement has resumed the shelling of government-held cities, media reports said this week. The city of Malanje, where an estimated 150,000 displaced people are crammed, has come under sporadic long-range shelling. The central highland city of Huambo also suffered shelling where UNITA has been targetting the airfield

SADC/DRC: Peace summit for Lusaka
A summit involving regional heads of government of all parties involved in the conflict in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is to be held in the Zambian capital, Lusaka, on 26 June, a senior Zambian government official told IRIN on Wednesday.

ANGOLA: Displaced people flock to capital
Angola's minister for Assistance and Social Reintegration, Albino Malungo, has said the country's humanitarian situation was "very grim" and on the verge of disaster with an estimated 1.6 million people displaced by fighting and some 3.5 million "affected by the war" around the Central Highlands cities of Huambo and Kuito, and further east in Luena.
