UNICEF Acción Humanitaria para la Infancia 2013

Prefacio del Director Ejecutivo

Acción Humanitaria para la Infancia 2013

A primera vista, Fatima aparentaba tener unos 4 o 5 meses.

Lesotho 2012 Flash Appeal

In Lesotho, a series of dry spells, late rains and early frost has led to an alarmingly steep reduction in agricultural yields for 2011/12. The adverse weather prevented most farmers from cultivating their fields and those who decided to plant did so late, affecting the maturity and quality of the crop. This season’s crop failure marks a significant decline in the country’s food security situation for the second year in a row.

Lesotho Flash Appeal 2012

Lesotho has experienced a more than 70% drop in domestic agricultural production that has put more than 725,000 people, over a third of the population, at serious risk of food insecurity. The sharp reduction in agricultural yields for 2011/2012, due to a series of flooding, late rains and early frost, has reduced domestic production to only 32% of the national average cereal harvest of the last 10 years.

Consolidated Appeals Process (CAP): Lesotho Drought Flash Appeal 2007

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

A combination of extremely high temperatures and low rainfall has led to one of the worst droughts in thirty years, causing the Government to declare an emergency on 9 July and request international assistance. Maize production, the country's main staple, has dropped by 51% compared to last year, causing a deficit that is likely to be further aggravated by decreased cereal production in parts of South Africa, which has also experienced below-average rainfall for much of this year, and which supplies approximately 70% of Lesotho's food requirements.
