Returns and displacement

By the end of December 2012, 467,533 people (140,725 families) had returned to the Northern Province. This figure includes 267,865 people (80,292 families) displaced after April 2008 and 199,668 people (55,273 families) displaced before April 2008 1 .

NATURAL DISASTERS IN 2012

After an intense year of natural disasters in 2011, countries in the Asia-Pacific region welcomed a reduction in the number of events in 2012. OCHA and the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters recorded 93 natural disaster events in 2012, in which over 3,200 people were killed and more than 75 million people were affected. China and the Philippines experienced the most disasters in 2012.

  1. At its 33rd meeting, on 31 May 2012, the Working Group on Children and Armed Conflict examined the fourth report of the Secretary-General on children and armed conflict in Sri Lanka (S/2011/793), covering the period from 1 February 2009 to 30 June 2011, which was introduced by the Office of the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Children and Armed Conflict. A representative of the Government of Sri Lanka to the United Nations also addressed the Working Group.

Asia Pacific Food Situation Update - December 2012

Typhoon Bopha hits Philippines banana harvest hard

About one quarter of the banana crop in the Philippines, a major food export for that country, has been destroyed by Typhoon Bopha, according to early damage assessments. Furthermore, banana growers fear the storm may have served to spread “Panama Disease,” which has been described by some researchers as “one of the most destructive plant diseases in modern times.”

Govt begins repairs of weather-damaged roads, flood relief efforts continue

The government has taken immediate measures to repair the roads and tanks damaged by the landslides and floods brought on by the adverse weather the country experienced during the last two weeks while the relief measures continued for the people affected by the floods.

Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera said the government continues to grant relief measure to all people displaced by the extreme weather despite the opposition's accusation that the government is not providing sufficient aid to the affected by the floods and landslides.

Alternate land for residents in disaster prone areas - President

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday assured to provide alternate land to the people living in landslides-prone areas.

During a visit to the Rattota electorate in Matale district, the President told the residents that the government would acquire the disaster-prone lands and provide them suitable alternate lands.

He was visiting the area on Saturday (29) to inspect the damage caused by floods and landslides and to inquire the well-being of the affected families who have been sheltered in 14 welfare camps.

Attacks on the independence of the judiciary must stop, warns UN expert

Geneva (31 December 2012) – The UN Special Rapporteur on the independence of judges and lawyers, Gabriela Knaul, expressed today serious concern about the impeachment proceedings against the Chief Justice of the Supreme Court and the recent attacks against lawyers who have been fighting for the independence of the judiciary in Sri Lanka.

According to information received by the independent expert, attacks and threats against members of the judiciary and lawyers, as well as interference in their work, have dramatically increased over the past few months.

Japan Supports Family Tracing and Reunification through UNICEF

The Government of Japan has partnered with UNICEF to extend support to the Family Tracing and Reunification Project. A funding grant of US$ 445,000 will be used to help families looking for their missing children, provide psychosocial support and build capacity of probation and childcare services.

Ambassador of Japan H.E. Mr. Nobuhito Hobo, Representative of UNICEF Sri Lanka Mr. Reza Hossaini and Major General G. A. Chandrasiri, Governor of the Northern Province attended the launch ceremony held at the Japanese Ambassador’s Residence.
